The breed of dog, bearing the beautiful and strange name of the Peruvian Inca Orchid, is a rarity even for professional dog handlers. This dog has an exotic appearance. She is almost hairless, with the exception of the tuft on her head.

But it would be a mistake to recommend it, as is often done, to people suffering from allergies. The cause of the allergy lies not in the dog's fur, but in its skin. Those who are susceptible to allergies will be just as likely to sneeze and wipe away tears in the presence of a Peruvian dog as they would be around a Caucasian Shepherd.

Origin of the breed

The Inca orchid was discovered in Peru, but exactly how it got there is unknown. It was believed that these dogs were brought from China by immigrants after the abolition of slavery. The second version is that the Peruvians came to Peru from Africa. However, the origin of this breed in South America is more likely to be true. The drawings of those times are very similar to the current Peruvian Nude.

Since local residents considered these dogs sick, they did not even pay attention to them. This happened because hairless dogs were not known to science at that time.

Much later, dog handler Jose Torres Ferraro compiled a breed standard. The Peruvian Inca Orchid was officially recognized in 1985. This is how it became known to the whole world, but is still considered exotic and rare.

When people in Europe learned about these dogs, for a long time they could not assign them to any group. At first they were classified as greyhounds, then as guard dogs, and finally, finally, as companions.

Origin story

The author of the St. Petersburg Orchid breed is a cynologist, owner of the nursery “S Lake Dolgoe” Nina Petrovna Nasibova. In 1997, she began work on creating a completely new decorative breed that could take its rightful place among domestic dogs. Under the leadership of Nasibova, a group of like-minded people, consisting of five breeders, gathered.

The author is still silent about which breeds were involved in breeding the orchid. When asked about the name, he replies that it came to mind quite suddenly and seemed very suitable. Small dogs born in cold St. Petersburg really resemble an elegant, sophisticated flower.

To obtain the desired type of dogs it took 3 years and two generations, from which the best were chosen. It was not difficult to consolidate the desired qualities. Previously, Nasibova was involved in breeding Russian toy terriers; she had already accumulated experience in selecting breeding pairs.

Patents for selection achievements give Nina Petrovna the right to individually control the breeding of dogs of the Petersburg Orchid and Nevskaya Orchid breeds for 30 years, as well as transfer rights in terms of breeding and sale to other persons. The breed is still very young and is at the breeding stage. St. Petersburg orchids have not yet received recognition in the RKF.

Breed standard

There are no strict restrictions in the breed standard. For hairless cats, a small amount of hair on the head is acceptable. And even a completely hairless dog can give birth to a puppy with fur. This is not considered a vice. Dogs with fur are divided into long-haired, short-haired and smooth-haired. But these are rare.

Leather comes in different colors. Acceptable colors are black, milky and gray. Spots of a different color are not prohibited. But a solid color has a privilege and is considered a sign of purebredness. The skin is soft to the touch, elastic, smooth.

Regarding size, Peruvians are divided into small, medium and large:

  • small - height 25-40 cm. Weigh from 4 to 8 kg;
  • medium - from 40 to 50 cm. Weight 8-12 kg;
  • large - height 50-65 cm. Weight from 12 to 35 kg.

Representatives of this breed are very proportional and elegant. The limbs are long, straight and muscular at the same time. The chest is deep, the ribs are rounded. The back is straight. The tail is medium, sickle-shaped, low set. Doesn't curl into a ring.

The head is wedge-shaped, with a wide skull. The transition from the forehead to the nose is clearly visible. The lower jaw is not fully developed. Hairless dogs do not have all their teeth. The eyes are almond-shaped, brown or black. The neck is medium, slightly curved.

Maintenance and care

Dogs of the Petersburg Orchid breed are absolutely unpretentious. Of course, this is not a street dog and they can only be kept in an apartment or house. They will take up very little space, and if you comb the fur regularly, an abundance of fallen fur will only be observed during seasonal molting. Orchids are neat, very clean, smart and obedient, and rarely misbehave. It is not necessary to take him outside regularly. Miniature orchids easily learn to wear a diaper and are not enthusiastic about the idea of walking in bad weather.

The beautiful shiny fur of an orchid is the result of a balanced diet, regular care and properly selected cosmetics. In general, caring for an orchid is not difficult. It is enough to brush your dog 2 times a week. Haircut once every 1-2 months. For bathing, it is very important to choose the right shampoo and conditioner that prevents the hair from tangling.

Like any other dog, the orchid needs to regularly wipe its eyes, removing accumulated secretions from the corners, and also clean its ears as needed, about once a week. It is very good if you can teach your dog to brush its teeth and perform this procedure several times a month or even daily.

Orchid trimming

Breeders have developed a specific haircut that emphasizes the advantages of the breed and allows you to create a characteristic, original appearance. The hair on the neck and body is removed as when cutting an American cocker. It is cut along the back and on the chest to the level of the shoulder joint. The bangs, beard and mustache remain on the head. Long hair covers the ears. On the forelimbs it is removed up to the metacarpal joints, and on the hind limbs at 1/5 of the hocks, then carefully leveled. The hair between the toes and pads is carefully trimmed. The tail is completely trimmed.

Clothes for orchids

To prevent hypothermia of your beloved pet, it is necessary to protect it from rain, wind, snow and cold, choosing clothes according to the weather. Already cute dogs look even more cute and attractive in clothes. You should choose clothes according to size. It should not restrict the dog's movements or be too spacious. You can focus on clothes for other miniature breeds. In addition to street clothes, pet stores offer a wide selection of clothes for home and holidays.

Nutrition

The best option for the St. Petersburg Orchid would be to select high-quality dry food from the series for miniature breeds. The amount of food is calculated based on the dog's weight. It is not necessary to supplement it with natural products, but as a treat, you can give your dog biscuits, hard cheese and boiled lean meat. You can also choose wet food for the St. Petersburg orchid, but mixing the two types is not recommended.

Health and common diseases

The Peruvian Inca Orchid is distinguished by enviable health. These dogs have excellent immunity. Even with a sedentary lifestyle, they do not gain weight. They do not have typical canine diseases, such as enteritis and distemper.

However, these dogs may have hereditary pancreatic diseases. Skin cancer and epilepsy also occur. Therefore, when purchasing a Peruvian dog, it is necessary to clarify whether there were such diseases in the family.

Representatives without hair often suffer from skin diseases, especially cancer and sunburn. Before walking in hot weather, be sure to treat your skin with sunscreen. In cold weather, wear special clothing for dogs.

Peruvian dogs have dental problems. This is due to the specific structure of the jaw and the lack of a full set of teeth. Tartar and gum disease often form. Also, lack of teeth affects the ability to chew food normally. This affects the gastrointestinal tract. Digestive disorders occur.

Peruvian dogs need to have their teeth brushed every day. Visit your veterinarian regularly. Remove tartar and plaque in a timely manner to avoid gum disease.

It is imperative to feed animals at the same time and correctly. For this purpose, there are specialized dry food for dogs with sensitive digestion. When feeding natural products, attention must be paid to quality. Fish and tubular bones should not be given. It is necessary to exclude smoked products, sausages, and kebabs.

Representatives of the breed are unique in their ability to sweat through their skin. While others have sweat glands located on the pads of their paws. Therefore, skin care is necessary. First of all, this is moisturizing with olive oil and special creams. Use protective creams from the sun and frost.

If a Peruvian has good heredity, adequate care and maintenance, then they very rarely get sick. They live 12-16 years, and maintain physical shape until their last days.

General description, history, character

For the first time, a naked Peruvian dog was noticed by Spanish colonialists. This is an ancient dog breed, developed in Peru hundreds of years BC. The Peruvian Inca orchid is divided into two subspecies, the first is bald, the second is covered with hair. According to the standard, a bald dog has short hair on its head, legs and the tip of its tail. Moreover, the aborigines used bald ones as pets, and dogs covered with hair for hunting. Now the hairless Peruvian dog, as it is called in its homeland, is rare.

The Indians of the tribe were considered excellent hunters and knew a lot about four-legged animals, which should be trained to hunt. The Peruvian orchid remained a hunting dog. It is noteworthy that the dogs of the Peruvian Orchid of the Incas, called naked, lived in wigwams with their owners and did not take part in hunts, and the furred tribesmen were bred and kept in Indian tribes exclusively for hunting.

Outwardly, the hairless dog resembles a small deer. The dog is highly valued in its homeland and is considered a national treasure. The Incas used to believe that the dog had miraculous properties and healing powers. Dogs were used to treat stomach pain and alleviate incurable diseases, for example, asthma.

The invasion of the Spanish conquistadors brought significant damage to the number of unique dogs, and gradually the breed began to revive. The Peruvian Inca Orchid was the first native dog from the Americas. The export of dogs to foreign countries is carefully controlled. Amateur dog handlers try to breed dogs on their own, trying to create new varieties of the breed.

The dog is focused on living with a person. Each representative of the breed is unique, each dog has an individual character, so different from the character of other dogs of the breed that it is difficult to get an overall picture. In a relationship with a person, a dog expresses the degree of affection within certain boundaries. Early socialization will help solve difficulties, including interaction with children and strangers.

The dog retains hunting instincts and is capable of chasing cats and chasing animals. The Peruvian Orchid is tolerant of other dogs in the house and even wants to make friends. Relations with familiar cats are quite peaceful.

Raising a dog from early childhood is mandatory; the animal has a highly developed sense of territory. On the one hand, this quality makes the dog an excellent guard; on the other hand, the dog is capable of protecting territory and property from encroachment with extreme zeal.

The dog is often recommended to people who are allergic to dog hair and who want to keep a perfectly clean apartment. Remember, an allergic reaction does not come from fur, but from the skin of the animal, the Peruvian orchid is an allergen, like any dog with fur!

The hairless dog from Peru is considered smart and quick-witted, and is easy to train. Great results can be achieved using methods based on soft reinforcement (treats).

The hairless Peruvian dog has unusual properties, in addition to the lack of hair, that distinguish it from other dogs. For example, the Inca orchid does not sweat with its tongue, like other dogs, but with its body, like a human. The dog is a nocturnal animal; it becomes active in the late afternoon and is able to stay up all night.

In tribes, dogs were bred by selecting light representatives and crossing them with existing dogs. Nowadays, kennel clubs in the United States are engaged in breeding, strengthening and introducing new varieties. The Peruvian Inca Orchid breed is recognized by the International Canine Association; there are not too many representatives of the breed.

Dogs become very attached to their owners. A change of owner for dogs is unthinkable.

Character

The hairless Peruvian dog is considered a companion; it adapts perfectly to the lifestyle of its owner. He can easily keep company in any activity. It can easily withstand long walks, travel, and crowded events.

However, representatives of this breed are mobile and active. Therefore, the owner must provide constant walks so that the dog can run freely.

The hairless dog's personality is very similar to that of the Great Dane. Equally imperturbable, with self-esteem. The Peruvian orchid loves comfort, so appropriate content must be created.

At the same time, the dogs are affectionate, kind, and loyal. They need their owner's attention and care. They communicate easily with children and other animals. If you don’t have time to constantly be with your pet or take it with you, then it’s better not to get such a dog.

Peruvians are also good guards and are wary of strangers.

Choosing a puppy

In our country, the Peruvian orchid is a rare and less common breed. Buying a puppy is quite difficult, but it is quite possible, since there are several nurseries that professionally breed these bald dogs (Icefire, Fama Bona, Sonderwol Legend, Van Edelsieger). You should not take risks and buy a Peruvian from strangers or through an advertisement, since there is a high probability of acquiring a crossbreed or just a similar outbred animal.

Hairless Peruvian dog puppies look little like their parents

It is quite difficult to distinguish a small Peruvian hairless dog from other similar breeds (for example, Mexican) (this task is not always possible even for experts), since often the puppies bear little resemblance to their parents (they are small, short-legged and wrinkled). But the characteristic “wolf” face is often visible even in babies. It is on this basis that Peruvian Hairless puppies are very different from Chinese Crested, Manchurian Hairless, Ecuadorian Hairless, etc.

You need to purchase a puppy from trusted and reliable breeders who guarantee its purebred and will confirm this fact with a package of necessary documents (puppy card, pedigree, veterinary book, etc.). Each animal must be branded or microchipped.

Puppy cost

The price of Peruvian Orchid puppies varies greatly, since the same litter can contain both hairless and woolly individuals. You can buy an animal with fur relatively inexpensively (5–10 thousand rubles); a bare-skinned pet is valued much more expensive (50–80 thousand rubles).

There have been many cases where woolly puppies were like that only until their first molt. Having lost their coat, they no longer gained it and became bald.

How to choose a puppy

When choosing a puppy, you must first focus on appearance. First of all, look at the skin, eyes, and anus. A healthy animal is always cheerful and curious. The eyes are shiny, there is no discharge, there are no dried crusts. A healthy puppy's nose is wet, cold, shiny, and without discharge. The anal opening is clean.

It is easy to determine the gender of dogs, just look at the belly. In girls, the genital organ is located near the anus, under the tail. And for boys, it’s in the middle of the stomach, under the navel. The genitals are always clean, dry, without any discharge.

Peruvians give birth to hairless puppies. But it happens with wool. Just because a hairless dog has puppies with fur doesn't mean they deviate from breed standards. This occurs in these animals and is not considered a defect at all.

Description of the breed

The Peruvian Hairless Dog (international name Peruvian Hairless Dog) is a companion dog bred in Peru, first for guard work, and then for decorative purposes. It is thanks to its decorative functions that the Peruvian naked became popular in its homeland, received international recognition and began to confidently spread throughout the world. Many people may have heard the expression “Inca orchid” at least once, but most likely they thought that we were talking about some kind of orchid growing in Peru, a beautiful and unusual flower. But this is a misconception. This is what Peruvian hairless dogs are called in their homeland, since their bare skin is usually covered with a peculiar pattern of spots, quite often they are shaped like orchid petals. However, exotic appearance is only one item from a long list of remarkable qualities of this breed.

The Peruvian Hairless Dog has a very friendly character, beautiful expressive eyes and a special gift of not only equally giving his love to all family members, but also healing the physical and mental pain of his household. The developed intelligence of the Peruvian naked even allows her to watch TV with you and, following the owner, actively react to the events taking place on the screen. The breed is characterized by an active lifestyle; dogs love movement and are happy to go for walks in any weather.

Features of care

The Peruvian Inca Orchid is low maintenance. But in our country the climate is colder than in Peru, so we need to protect animals from hypothermia. In winter, you need to wear overalls for walks and avoid drafts at home.

During the heating season, the skin and ears may dry out. In this case, it is worth installing a humidifier at home. This will also be useful for the nasal mucous membranes.

Skin also needs special care. Moisturize, wash with shampoo for sensitive skin, apply sunscreen.

Pets need to periodically brush their teeth, ears, and wash their eyes. Keep your nails trimmed regularly.

The main thing in caring for such a dog is love, affection and attention. If the necessary conditions are created, the pet will delight you with its good health.

Living in a private home

This cute dog from Peru is ideal for keeping in an apartment - she is quite happy with two short walks a day, during which the animal should not be let off the leash. If you have your own yard, then it is advisable to have a shady place in it where the “Peruvian” can relax and not get sunburned.

As you can see, the Peruvian Inca Orchid is a very interesting breed. There is practically no one in the Russian Federation, but we hope that in the very near future these dogs will delight Russian animal lovers.
