Determining the day of mating
Pregnancy in a toy terrier dog can only occur if fertilization is successful. This is only possible if the days favorable for mating are correctly determined. The owner must understand that this parameter is individual for each animal. In the literature there are often recommendations to breed a dog at 12-14 days. But all toy terriers are different, one bitch will successfully breed on the 9th day, while another – on the 18th.
Even if this dog was already bred, for example, on the 12th day, and then she gave birth to puppies, this does not mean that this will always be the case. Readiness to mate depends on many factors: age, physical condition, time of year. If you rely only on book recommendations, then your bitch may never get pregnant.
It is very good if there is a male dog in the house, he will help determine the optimal mating day. But most often the owners have only one dog, so this method is not suitable for everyone. In this case, you can contact a veterinarian who, using swabs from the loop and a blood test, can determine the best day for mating.
Dog pregnancy by day
The development of a puppy in the womb occurs daily. To understand your dog’s condition during pregnancy, you need to know what happens to her during a certain period of this process.
20th day of pregnancy in a dog
During this period, puppies develop a heart. The dog may suffer from toxicosis. Try increasing your portion sizes.
28th day of pregnancy in dogs
During this period, the puppies have already formed and can be clearly seen on an ultrasound. It is recommended to give the dog more rest and introduce specialized vitamins for pregnant women into the diet.
33rd day of dog pregnancy
The puppies are fully formed. Their limbs are already clearly visible on ultrasound. The dog should get plenty of rest and walk in the fresh air.
47th day of pregnancy in a dog
During this period, it is recommended to do an ultrasound to accurately determine the number of puppies.
55th day of pregnancy in a dog
During this period, the dog begins to prepare for childbirth. She chooses a place to give birth and behaves restlessly.
If the mating was carried out in an organized manner, then taking into account these data it is possible to determine in what period of development the puppies are now in the womb.
Symptoms of pregnancy in a toy
In the early stages, not every owner will be able to notice signs of an interesting situation in their dog. How long does a toy terrier's pregnancy last? Usually about 62 days. In the later stages, the bitch’s interesting position can be seen with the naked eye. In the first weeks, pregnancy is hardly noticeable, but the dog may exhibit the following signs:
- unusual behavior;
- the appearance of strange food cravings;
- change in the animal's well-being.
The toy terrier, after it begins to feel its interesting position, will take care of itself. Most dogs try to jump less, the bitch becomes more careful in games. The longer the period, the more the toy terrier protects itself.
Just like in humans, toxicosis occurs in dogs. In this case, the toy terrier may feel sick. If a dog doesn’t feel well, it tries to lie down more and its appetite decreases. The bitch may develop unusual food preferences. The uterus puts pressure on the stomach, so the dog begins to eat more often, but in small portions.
How is pregnancy determined?
A veterinarian can definitely confirm pregnancy using the following methods:
In the early stages, an experienced veterinarian can visually determine pregnancy by characteristic changes
This method allows you to determine whether you are pregnant or not, as well as the number of fetuses and their state of development.
The X-ray method can be used only from the 42nd day of pregnancy, since only during this period do puppies develop bones.
The most appropriate method for determining pregnancy is determined by your veterinarian.
It is important to know how the pregnancy process in a dog proceeds, since this information will allow you to monitor the health status of your pet and, in case of complications or other deviations from the norm, quickly take the necessary measures.
The pregnancy of a toy terrier has a tremendous impact on the dog’s body. All changes occurring in an animal occur in a short time. On average, nature allocated nine weeks (from 60 to 66 days) for the formation and development inside the womb of one or more living beings.
The terrier, fragile and miniature, needs to cope with all this hectic household, conveniently located in her tummy. The body of a pregnant toy terrier experiences enormous stress and stress. You, as the owner, as the person responsible for your pet, should help your girl. Otherwise, she may not be able to cope.
Pregnancy by day
After mating, fertilization does not occur immediately. First, the sperm meets the egg. Then, as a result of fertilization, a zygote is formed, which is attached to the uterus on days 12-14. Pregnancy of a toy terrier by day:
- For 15 days, the embryo is fixed in the uterine cavity. From this moment on, the dog needs to be protected and protected from stress.
- At 17 days, the embryos develop a head, body, and spine.
- On day 21, the embryo begins to develop a heart.
- From day 22, pregnancy can be seen on an ultrasound machine. During this period, the dog experiences discharge from the loop and may begin vomiting.
- By day 26, the puppies reach the size of a walnut. From this moment on, the babies can be felt by palpating the abdominal wall of the bitch.
- By the 34th day, the dog’s belly has enlarged, they take great care of themselves, jump and run less.
- On the 44th day of pregnancy, the uterus significantly increases in size, and the hair around the mammary glands falls out.
- By 50 days, an experienced breeder may notice movements of the puppies in the bitch’s stomach.
- From day 58, the dog begins to produce milk.
How long does pregnancy last for a toy terrier? Typically 58 to 64 days. If a dog's rectal temperature drops to 36 degrees, then it will give birth in the next 24 hours.
Pregnancy in Toy Terriers.
The accelerated gestation of puppies in small terriers, compared to humans, requires a timely and correct response to the pregnancy of that terrier week by week.
1-3 weeks of pregnancy.
The first three weeks of pregnancy in toy terriers, as we have already said, occur without any visible changes in the dog. The Toy Terrier is recommended to have a regular feeding schedule and daily walks. Remember that at this stage, puppies inside the womb are especially susceptible to any chemical and infectious attack. Therefore, during this period, do not treat the dog for helminths, do not use medications (only if absolutely necessary and under the supervision of a veterinarian), do not allow the dog to come into contact with sick animals and temporarily do not use household chemicals in the house.
The diet is the usual two meals a day, morning and evening.
If the toy terrier is overweight, then the diet changes. The amount of cereals and baked goods decreases and the amount of vegetables and herbs increases. The diet must contain proteins, fats, easily digestible carbohydrates and fiber. All this is provided by boiled liver, cottage cheese, milk porridge, grated vegetables (just don’t give raw cabbage, as it produces gas), chopped herbs seasoned with vegetable oil. As an addition to meat (and not instead of it), the menu must include boiled sea fish.
The normal metabolism of that female terrier in the first weeks of pregnancy will provide calcium. For mommy, the norm is calculated from the ratio per 1 kilogram of body weight - 35 milligrams of calcium. Also, for the formation of the fetus during this period, an additional amount of no less than 30 milligrams per 1 kilogram of body weight will be required during the day. Calculate the need for phosphorus from the proportion - calcium: phosphorus = 1.2:1.
Drugs that can be used are calcium glycerophosphate, calcium gluconate or calcium phosphate in tablets or powders. Veterinarians do not recommend using granulated glycerophosphate because this drug contains sugar. Be sure to combine calcium salts with phosphorus.
Be sure to replenish the body of a pregnant toy terrier with vitamins A, D and E. If the puppies are born during the warm season, then it is enough to introduce vitamin-containing foods into the diet. Vitamin A, which is found in fish oil, liver, and egg yolk. The toy terrier can also get vitamin D from fish oil, egg yolk, as well as from yeast and walks in the sun. Vitamin E is found in cereals and vegetable oils. In winter, additionally and regularly introduce vitamins for your diet. Ask your veterinarian to calculate the dosage, which is affected by body weight and physical condition.
4 – 6 weeks of pregnancy.
The second month is marked by palpation of hardening in the terrier’s stomach. Be sure to show the cat to the veterinarian. Using an ultrasound examination, the dog doctor will determine the dynamics of pregnancy and help determine the time of birth.
Between the 5th and 6th weeks, resist the temptation to feel your dog's belly. This cannot be done.
Puppies begin to move in the womb at eight weeks. Their length is already about 8-10 centimeters and they are beginning to be covered with hair. You can easily feel this by simply placing your hand on the miniature terrier's stomach.
Transfer your pet to three meals a day, increasing the volume of lunch with protein foods. This applies, first of all, to meat, fish, and cottage cheese.
Let's have more milk porridges, soups, you can add milk to cottage cheese. In general, there are more liquid dishes. Increase the mineral fertilizing first by one and a half, and then by two times.
That is, regarding diet:
- increase the amount of protein food. The total volume of food should increase by one third.
- We diversify the menu with raw grated vegetables and fruits.
- reducing carbohydrates.
- add fertilizer.
- additionally increase vitamin A.
These are general requirements. Based on them, you must approach the issue of feeding individually for your pregnant dog. Because you will be faced with either an increasing or decreasing appetite of a pregnant toy terrier.
Just don’t follow the lead of the all-consuming pet. In a well-fed dog, childbirth is much more difficult.
7th week of pregnancy.
Your pet is undergoing significant external changes. Her body expanded, becoming noticeably larger in the chest and tummy areas. The dog's nipples are swollen and darkened. The groin area begins to descend. The cat's appetite decreases. Therefore, remove foods from the diet that can cause constipation in the animal. Look at what a pregnant toy terrier looks like in the PHOTO at this time.
During this period, stop long walks. It's better to walk a little, but often. The uterus begins to put pressure on the bladder, so the dog needs to do its little things more often. This should become normal until childbirth. Make sure that the dog does not jump, chase other animals, or climb into bodies of water. Walk her in quiet, calm places where there are no external stimuli. Let the dog choose the pace of the walk itself - let him be naughty. As soon as you see signs of fatigue from walking in a pregnant toy terrier, take her home.
8th week of pregnancy.
The puppies are almost fully formed, covered with fur, their eyes and ears are closed, and a “fontanel” appears on the head.
At this time, reduce your walks, as the toy terrier gets tired and needs a long rest. Take your pet outside as much as she asks. And even if at night the terrier wants to go out into the air, take her out. Believe me, it's not easy for her.
Eliminate meat products from your diet and replace them with sea fish. It is important not to reduce the number of calories needed by the expectant mother. If you reduce calories, you will not be able to avoid eclampsia. This is a form of toxicosis in which convulsions begin. It appears in the last weeks of pregnancy.
9th week of pregnancy.
Swollen nipples and colostrum protruding when pressed indicate the onset of the last days before childbirth. Don't be alarmed if a week before the puppies are born, your dog's temperature drops to 37.5 degrees. This is fine.
Mommy begins to independently prepare for the birth of her babies. She can start “building” a nest, scratch the floor, dig a “burrow,” and drag toys and things into her house.
Until delivery, reduce the amount of food you eat by about a quarter. Feed often, but in small portions.
A decrease in the body temperature of a toy terrier below 37 degrees for a short time indicates the beginning of labor. We invite you to view the changes that occur during pregnancy of a toy terrier day by day with PHOTO.
Gestational age | Fetal development | Changes in the bitch |
1-30 day | On the 30th day, the embryo reaches 2 cm in size (a walnut). Calcification of the skull, jaw, spine and limbs is in full swing. Internal organs and nervous system are rapidly forming | Toy may lose her appetite, feel nauseous, and sometimes vomit. The mood is sluggish and not playful. Your dog's vagina may discharge clear mucus. The nipples turn slightly pink, and the hair on the belly around the nipples thins. |
31-42 days | The fruit grows rapidly, the bones of the limbs and ribs become stronger. The fur begins to grow. And it is during this period that primary sexual characteristics develop in puppies. The formation of internal organs is completed. The eyes are already developed, but are still closed. | The belly is growing. The dog becomes very sensitive and quiet. |
43-49 day | Puppies can be felt with your fingers, but their number cannot yet be felt. | The mother's mammary gland is noticeably enlarged, there is practically no hair around the nipples - the bitch licks these places all the time. The dog begins to increase in size. Behaves anxiously. |
50-56 days | Puppies weigh 75% of their birth weight. Teeth formation occurs. | You can determine the location of the puppies by looking at their belly. Appetite is reduced or disappears altogether. The dog rests almost all the time. |
57-65 days | The fur of the fruits begins to grow. The puppies are ready to be born. | By pressing on the dog's nipples, milk is noticeably released. A day or half a day before giving birth, the dog often refuses food. The temperature decreases. There is a waste of amniotic fluid. Due to hormonal changes in the body, the uterus begins to contract - contractions begin, and then childbirth. |
Pregnancy in small dog breeds is a difficult stage in life for the animal and the owner. Toy terriers often give birth with various complications. To reduce the risk of problems during whelping, the owner of the bitch must closely monitor her health and provide proper attention and care throughout the entire period of gestation.
Diagnostics
To determine pregnancy in a veterinary clinic, several methods are used:
- ultrasonography;
- X-ray;
- palpation.
All methods are informative; your doctor will help you choose the best one. The most popular method is ultrasound. With its help, you can find out the approximate gestational age of a toy terrier. Using an ultrasound machine, the owner will be able to see the puppies in the uterine cavity in real time.
With radiographic examination, the number of fetuses can be accurately calculated from their skeletons. But this method should only be used from 40-45 days of the dog’s pregnancy. By palpation, the doctor can feel the puppies in the bitch's stomach. Owners should not do this on their own; it can cause a miscarriage. In addition, inexperienced owners, when palpating, most likely will not be able to distinguish small fetuses in the uterine cavity from the animal’s own tissues.
Feeding a pregnant bitch
While pregnant, your dog's appetite may change. Some animals become selective eaters, while others, on the contrary, begin to consume more food. Pregnancy in a toy terrier lasts up to 72 days. During this time, the dog's food preferences may change several times.
If the animal is accustomed to dry diets, then it needs to be switched to puppy food. In addition to ready-made food, there is no need to buy vitamins, because it already contains everything necessary for the normal development of pregnancy. Puppy food contains more protein, which is very beneficial for the expectant mother.
If the dog eats natural food, then you will definitely have to buy vitamins. The bitch should start receiving a high-quality mineral complex from the first day of pregnancy. If this is not done, the puppies may be born weak and underdeveloped. You can feed the dog only fresh ingredients; it is forbidden to give the pregnant bitch leftovers from the owner’s table.
Feeding a pregnant dog
Often during this period the dog’s appetite changes (but not necessarily), it begins to eat vegetables to which it was previously indifferent or, conversely, refuses food it has always loved. This is fine. In order for your dog to eat well, do not limit its diet to usual foods, offer it fruits, dairy products, low-fat cheeses, adding them to the foods of the main diet. If your dog eats natural foods
, be sure to buy a good vitamin complex for pregnant women. Vitamins are needed from the first days of pregnancy!!! All organs and systems of the puppy develop in the first 2 weeks after mating, and vitamin deficiency has a detrimental effect on their formation.
If the dog eats dry food, then switch it to puppy food. It contains more protein and vitamins. There is no need to buy additional vitamins if you feed your dog dry food! There are a number of vitamins (for example, vitamin A) that, in high doses, have a terratogenic (leading to deformities) effect.
Walks in the fresh air can be quite long and active, but not to the point of exhaustion, but with pleasure! Take your dog with you on a picnic, or for a walk in the forest, or to pick mushrooms. But it’s not worth it for a birthday party with friends or another noisy company.
By the second period of pregnancy (this is from the fifth week of pregnancy), all organs and systems of puppies have already formed and function independently (except for the lungs, of course). From this moment, the puppies begin to gain weight at an accelerated pace, acquire muscles, skin, hair, and the skeleton becomes ossified. From this moment on, the dog’s nutrition during pregnancy should be under special control! Every day the uterus begins to take up more and more space in the abdominal cavity, constricting other organs, the diaphragm, the stomach... But more and more nutrients and oxygen are required for the formation of puppies...
During this period, it is necessary to feed the dog ONLY high-quality food with a high protein content (not fat!) and always easily digestible. This is primarily: dairy products, liver, high-quality offal, super-premium dry food for puppies. Due to the fact that the dog’s stomach cannot now accommodate the required amount of food at a time, and the need for this very food has increased, the frequency of feedings must be increased. Now setting the bowl twice a day is not enough! You need to feed her more often (preferably 4-5 times a day), in small portions and variedly. But just feed, and not throw pieces between feedings. A small piece of cheese is not food, but a delicacy. You won’t be full of it, but the desire to eat from a bowl will disappear.
I myself feed my dogs dry food, but during pregnancy, in order to improve palatability, I soak the dry food in broth with minced meat, add fermented milk products and cottage cheese, a little butter and vegetable oil, and grated carrots to the food. If you feed natural products, you need to reduce the proportion of cereals in the diet, and increase the proportion of meat and vegetables. And be sure to introduce vegetable oil into the diet as a source of light fats, fermented milk products as a source of calcium (and you will need oh so much of it to have enough for all the puppies’ bones) and vegetables as a source of vitamins.
If there are not enough nutrients (fats, proteins, calcium, vitamins, etc.) in the diet, they will be washed out of the mother’s body, depleting her. This cannot be allowed in any way, because she needs not only to bear, but also to feed newborn puppies
milk! In general, a pregnant dog's diet should increase in calorie content by 30%. So treat your dogs to variety during pregnancy.
Exercise of a pregnant bitch
During gestation, both mother and future puppies experience an increased need for oxygen. Walking is a must in the life of a pregnant bitch. Yes, a dog can wear a diaper at home, but you cannot completely deprive it of fresh air at such a crucial moment. During pregnancy, the Toy Terrier's walks will not be as long as before.
While the dog is outside, the owner must ensure that the dog does not become overtired. It is better to avoid playing with other animals, especially large ones. Usually the dog is already aware of its interesting situation and takes care of itself, but the owner must also be vigilant.
Walking outside is very beneficial for a pregnant bitch; it helps the animal stay in good shape. It has been noticed that in dogs that sit at home all the time, complications during childbirth are more common than in more active individuals. If there are no contraindications to walks, then the toy terrier can be taken outside every day until the birth itself.
Pregnant bitch
Caring for a dog during pregnancy must be divided into two periods.
During these periods, the bitch will have different needs related to the formation of fruits and, accordingly, different care. And so your dog is bred and you are waiting impatiently.... In fact, the dog must be prepared in advance for mating. She should approach mating in good condition, well-fed, but not obese. It should be dewormed and vaccinated in advance, because... This will not be possible during pregnancy.
The first period of pregnancy is characterized by the fact that the dog’s immunity decreases somewhat, and therefore the body’s resistance to diseases and stress decreases. And although in the first half of pregnancy there is no need to increase the diet (moreover, this is undesirable, the level of calorie content must be kept at the same level), participation in exhibitions and various trips should be abandoned. Increasing any kind of stress or stress can lead to resorption of the fetus.
Complications during pregnancy
Bearing fruits is not always successful; sometimes the owners themselves are to blame. Some reasons for the development of complications during pregnancy:
- the dog’s unpreparedness for pregnancy, for example, early age or low weight;
- poor environmental conditions in the bitch’s place of residence;
- improper unbalanced diet;
- use of certain medications.
These factors can harm the expectant mother and her babies. The most common types of complications during pregnancy in a toy terrier:
- toxicosis;
- miscarriage;
- false pupishness.
Some diseases that the bitch suffers from can cause spontaneous abortion. Toxicosis in toy terriers is most often observed at the very beginning of pregnancy. The dog is nauseous, spends almost all the time lying down and refuses to eat.
Before a miscarriage, the animal develops strange discharge from the loop. If the cause of spontaneous abortion is an infection, then they have an unpleasant putrid odor. Sometimes pupishness can be false. In this case, the dog acts like it is pregnant, but in reality it is empty.
Signs of approaching labor
The Toy Terrier is a small breed of dog, so they are more likely to experience complications during childbirth than, for example, German Shepherds. Therefore, the owner should be especially attentive to his pet during pregnancy. If something goes wrong during the birth process, the owner should immediately call a veterinary specialist. It is better to write down the doctor’s phone number in advance, so that later, if necessary, you can find him immediately.
If the toy terrier's pregnancy has come to an end, the owner will be able to notice signs of impending birth:
- the dog is worried, whines, looks at its stomach;
- the animal refuses food and water;
- the bitch’s rectal temperature dropped to 36 degrees;
- the pet is trembling.
These symptoms should alert the owner. Some dogs dig bedding during contractions, preparing a nest for future babies. Typically, after these signs appear, labor occurs within 24 hours.
Births of a toy terrier
The owner should not leave a dog in labor for a minute. If you are nearby, then the toy terrier will behave calmly. Talk to him kindly and quietly. Arrange the birthing area in advance. Make a bedding out of a towel. Here is a more detailed list of signs of labor beginning:
- within a couple of hours the dog begins to worry;
refuses food and drink;
digs the ground, whines;
stretches, a shiver runs through the body.
Sometimes labor begins unexpectedly, without any characteristic signs.
Childbirth
The owner should prepare in advance for the expected date of birth of the puppies. It is necessary to determine the place where the animal will give birth. The owner should purchase absorbent diapers and a heating pad for the puppies. For long-haired Toy Terriers, the hair around the nipples and loops should be trimmed.
The opening of the birth canal in a dog is accompanied by contractions. At first they are very weak and unnoticeable, but then they intensify. The dog at this moment becomes nervous, digs the bedding, and often asks to go to the toilet. 3-12 hours after the onset of contractions, the bitch begins to push. The dog lies on its side and gives birth to a puppy. The baby is in the membranes, which the bitch ruptures. If she does not do this, then the owner must come to her aid. Then you need to tie the umbilical cord, trim it with sterile scissors and treat the wound with peroxide.
Complications during childbirth
Large breeds often give birth much easier than small breeds. Even if the pregnancy of a Yorkshire terrier or toy terrier proceeded well, this does not mean that the birth will definitely go well. If the attempts have been going on for an hour, and the puppy has still not been born, then you need to call the clinic. The fetus may be too large, then the small dog will not be able to give birth to it. In this case, the doctor performs a caesarean section.
Another common complication is postpartum eclampsia. It is due to the fact that the embryos took too much calcium from the mother during development. Therefore, it is very important to feed a pregnant bitch in a balanced manner. Without treatment, the dog dies from eclampsia, often in a fairly short time. The main symptoms of the disease:
- shiver;
- convulsions;
- frozen look.
This pathology requires immediate contact to a veterinary clinic. It is better to place puppies before consulting a veterinarian.

TOY TERRIER AND CHILDREN
FROM THIS ARTICLE YOU WILL LEARN:
- Why the Russian Toy (Toy Terrier), as well as dogs of other miniature breeds, are not a toy for a child
- How to teach a child to follow the BASIC RULES OF COMMUNICATION with a toy terrier
- When to make sure your child doesn't have allergies
Very often I receive calls and requests from families with children who want to become the owners of a Russian Toy (Toy Terrier) puppy. The desire in itself to purchase a puppy, including a miniature breed, for a family with small children is a wonderful desire. But this desire, nevertheless, requires serious discussion within the family circle and extremely responsible preparation, in case of a positive decision.
Let's start with the most common requests for Toy Terrier (Russian Toy) puppies from parents and families with children:
- Hello, we would like to buy a puppy. For my daughter on September 1st. She asks a lot. We would like less. My daughter is 7 years old, but she is SOOO smart!
- Hello, we would like a puppy. We have three children. No longer adults - 5,7 and 8 years old. They have been asking for a dog for a very long time, but the place doesn’t allow us to get a big one!
- Hello, the children are asking for a dog. But we haven't decided yet. Can we come just to play with your puppies?
-What's wrong with such requests? - you ask.
And I will answer:
You may have the smartest, most well-mannered and understanding children. They often play with the cat when visiting their grandmother and are very neat. For a couple of years now, tears have come to their eyes at the sight of their neighbor Tuzik, and your heart can no longer tolerate the “suffering” of the child.
But just think, what will it be like for you, your child and your family when, as a result of a second of inattention, the puppy receives an injury for life or that is not compatible with life at all?
Do you want a dog so much that when your child gets tired of a puppy or an adult dog, you can devote as much of your personal free time (if you have any) to raising him?
Part 1: TOY TERRIER IS NOT A TOY FOR A CHILD!
I don’t want to scare you or exaggerate, but the fact remains – EVEN WITH ADULT OWNERS, THE MOST COMMON “DISEASE” OF A TOY TERRIER IS INJURY DUE TO THE OWNERS’ OGLIGENCE. Fractures in a toy terrier, especially those sustained during the dog's growth period, often heal difficultly and leave a mark for life. Typically, such fractures require expensive operations and a long rehabilitation period. And the point is not the special fragility of the dog - the reason is precisely the owner’s oversight , applying to a puppy or adult dog a force incommensurate with its size. After all, a person falling from the 3rd floor of a house will most likely suffer. And the point is not in the fragility of the bones of a particular person, but in the height)))
A small child, unfortunately, is sometimes simply not able to react in a second and prevent misfortune. That is why adults always supervise the child, and adult owners must also supervise the Toy Terrier puppy. Often, a child or his friends accidentally, from fear or other circumstances, unclench their hands holding a puppy, and the puppy, falling, receives SERIOUS INJURY! Little puppies are not yet afraid of their feet, have not learned to “dodge” people and doors, and are absolutely not afraid of heights. The child may simply not have time to react. A child can sit on a high sofa or bed, get distracted for a second, and the dog will unsuccessfully jump from a height or from his lap.
All children are different. Some, indeed, communicate very gently and carefully with animals. Others can be abrupt and sometimes rude. This is why most breeders perceive requests to “come visit just to play” negatively. the breeder cannot assess the communication style of your child, and especially several children at the same time, in advance
-Is it so bad? -you ask.
Of course not!
Part 2: CHILDREN AND TOY TERRIERS: BASIC RULES OF COMMUNICATION
The purpose of this article is to convey to future owners that a TOY TERRIER (Russian Toy) PUPPY IS NOT A TOY OR COMPANION FOR A SMALL CHILD. But Toy can be a great family member and friend!
In my deep conviction, a TOY TERRIER puppy can be BUYED FOR A FAMILY WITH CHILDREN only if it is purchased primarily BY ADULTS AND FOR ADULTS, or as another family member under the full responsibility of the parents. Children, of course, can and should participate in raising and raising a puppy, learning responsibility and attentiveness, but under the constant supervision of adults.
In addition, in order for the toy terrier and the child to live together happily ever after, it is very important to train the children in advance
BASIC RULES FOR COMMUNICATION WITH A TOY TERRIER (RUSSIAN TOY) PUPPY:
- Never pick up a puppy while standing (the younger the child, the more important this rule is. You can play with the puppy while sitting on the floor and take him on your lap. However, the puppy should not be allowed to climb high)
- Never lift a puppy onto sofas, beds or other surfaces (over time, when the puppy learns to climb on them, it will be safe for him to jump off)
- Never pull or lift the puppy by the paws (the puppy can only be picked up under the chest, holding it tightly)
- Never run after a puppy.
- Do not make sudden movements towards the puppy, play and communicate with the puppy only when he himself wants it.
- Try not to scream or make harsh sounds in the presence of the puppy.
- Do not feed the puppy anything without adult permission.
- Watch your step, carefully open and close doors.
It is also worth noting that when a child is born into a family that already has a dog, he is often calmer towards it and from childhood learns how to properly communicate with animals.
A child can and should participate in raising and caring for a dog under the supervision of parents
For families with children, I often recommend considering purchasing a GROWN puppy or a stronger puppy (i.e., standard size and fairly strong boned). A grown-up puppy is already better oriented in space, he can already jump off the sofa on his own and does not get under his feet.
Part 3: TESTING FOR ALLERGIES
A very important point when buying a TOY TERRIER PUPPY for a family with a child, or for any family, is checking family members for allergies!
A lot of family dramas and broken psyches in puppies happen due to “accidentally” discovered allergies among family members, and especially children!
In general, the Toy Terrier (Russian Toy) is considered a relatively safe breed from an allergy point of view. After all, toys DO NOT have an undercoat - one of the main causes of allergies to dogs. But, in addition to allergies to wool, allergies to skin secretions and saliva are quite common. In this case, a person begins to become allergic even to “hairless” hairless dogs or non-shedding dogs (without undercoat).
One of the easiest ways to test your child for allergies (besides going to the allergist) is to visit friends with dogs. Moreover, going to visit is the most effective, because in a house where dogs live, there are potential allergens in different parts of the apartment, and not just on the animal itself.
It is best to stay at a party for at least 2-3 hours, and in general, the longer the better! It is also good if the dog breed is similar in coat type to the breed you are planning to buy (in our case, a toy).
The closer communication you and your child have with the dog when visiting (hugging, kissing, lying around!), the more effective the test will be. Allergens react most quickly on human mucous membranes – the nose and eyes.
Teach children how to properly and gently treat a dog.
If for some reason you don't have friends with animals, a large dog show might be a great place to "test." You can spend half a day or a whole day at the show; there are always a lot of dogs at the shows, as well as fur. In addition, the exhibition is an excellent place to get to know your chosen breed better. You will be able to communicate with breeders and breeders, ask questions that interest you, and also see adult breed dogs.
So, basic tips and recommendations when there is a CHILD in the family and a TOY TERRIER is planned, or vice versa))
- Toy Terrier (Russian Toy) is always the responsibility of an adult
- A toy terrier is a FRIEND for a child, but never a TOY.
