Training Alabai (Central Asian Shepherd Dog)

Alabais are the oldest herding breed, which for centuries guarded livestock, farmsteads and human property. Anger and fearlessness are what made them real weapons, and their unsafe work taught the dogs to think and make decisions on their own. Needless to say, raising an Alabai is not an easy task at all and requires certain knowledge and skills. How to raise an Alabai puppy and find an approach to an adult Asian?

How to raise an Alabai

Character and temperament

Raising an Alabai, on the one hand, is a very productive activity, since these dogs naturally have a lively mind and intelligence. But if you look at it from the other side, then you have hard and painstaking work ahead of you, since the dog’s excessive independence and his tendency to disobey can become a serious problem for you. The independence of such dogs is genetic: they were once bred for the purpose of herding sheep and protecting numerous herds.

These large animals could even cope with wolves, but what is important is that they grazed and protected livestock from threats not only on the orders of the owner, but also alone. Willpower and independence were valued before, but now they are becoming the first serious obstacle to establishing psychological contact between a person and an Alabai. This is what you will need to do first.

Training an Alabai at home will be truly effective if you initially show your superiority over the dog. By allowing your dog to disobey once, you will thereby accept his independent model of behavior. There is no punishment - there will be no obedience from the alabai. To avoid such a situation, try to create not particularly comfortable situations for the puppy from an early age: take him for a walk to unfamiliar places, carry him in a car or public transport. Once in a strange atmosphere, the baby will be confused, and in the meantime you will calmly demonstrate your leadership qualities. Thus, from a young age the puppy will remember who is boss in the house.

Peculiarities of raising a Central Asian Shepherd Dog

Alabai is perhaps one of the most aggressive and difficult breeds. However, having overcome some of the difficulties of upbringing, one’s own fears, stages of training, an unpredictable character, and most importantly, having gained his trust, one can raise a devoted and reliable protector of the family.

It is given by nature that the Alabai is a pack dog, which has hierarchical status and a special desire to take a leading place in its blood. If you compare a dog to modern conditions, he will strive to take the place of leader. The aggressiveness of the Alabai is just a way to achieve a coveted place, and disrespect for the owner. This means that the owner of a moral dog at one time did not show “who is boss in the house and who should serve whom.” So the dog decided to take the leading place, winning it back as best he could. Another, no less terrible option is when she puts herself in second place after the head of the family. Such a relationship is dangerous for other family members and animals at home. So, she suddenly bites a child in the family, or, under the teeth of an obedient dog, a beloved cat with whom she grew up may be injured. But in reality there is no “suddenly” moment. Simply, since he is in second place, and other family members who are lower in rank have disobeyed, they should be punished.

The intellectual development of these dogs is much better than that of other representatives of the canine tribe. They are able to independently and accurately make logical decisions in complex situations. However, they have their own feelings, and if they are insulted or forced to perform tasks that they consider “stupid”, they will refuse or be offended. Such fundamental and complex behavior is not a disadvantage, but rather a feature that should be taken into account when choosing and raising a pet. After 3 months from the moment of birth, these are dogs with a formed personality, their own concepts and principles, which must be carefully modified to suit themselves and family members.

Alabai training - how to raise an Alabai puppy

  1. We must not forget that it is not worth breaking an animal and depriving it of your desires and concepts; they may get angry and become aggressive.
  2. Be patient. The fruits of training will not come immediately, but after a few months.
  3. Remember, you become responsible not only for the puppy, but also for your life and the safety of others.
  4. Raising an Alabai puppy should begin as soon as it appears in your home.
  5. First of all, you need to develop reflexes of submission, and an unfailing readiness to carry out given commands.
  6. Physical violence should be excluded as punishment.
  7. From a very early age, the puppy must learn to give away his own food and not steal other people’s food.
  8. In order to teach the “sit” command, place your hand near the tail and lightly press down, and repeat the command several times. If the puppy does the right thing, give him a treat. By repeating this technique several times, the dog will learn the command you need.
  9. The most difficult commands to teach are “near” and “stay”. Such commands are taught according to a similar principle as the “sit” command.
  10. The main thing to remember is that once you have given the desired command, you should not cancel it, but ensure that it is executed to the end. Otherwise, the puppy will sense this and take the chance to “evade” the task.
  11. Starting from 4 months, it is worth preparing the puppy for expected life situations. Walk him in different places, introduce him to other canines. Visit places with large crowds of people, cars, trains, noise, travel by public transport, metro and trains.
  12. He learns not only discipline, but also distinguishes between different groups of people.

Basic rules and advice from a dog handler

Training an Alabai is impossible without establishing psychological contact between the owner and the dog. The pet must trust you, and only then can you teach it to perform various commands. When training your dog, try not to overdo it: hitting your pet or yelling at it is not the best option. It’s better to carefully grab the puppy by the withers, shake it and say “Ugh!” or “You can’t!” Pay special attention to your facial expressions, as well as the intonation of your voice (you can raise it or speak to the dog in a serious, low voice). This way your four-legged friend will learn to take your words seriously. Screaming will not bring any results.

When an Alabai boy or girl is 6–7 months old, the first results are evident: the pet must know and follow basic commands, walk down the street in a muzzle, and also calmly respond to the owner’s touches and caresses. Another important point that experts recommend paying special attention to is that you need to teach the puppy that the owner can take away his bowl. This is necessary so that in the future the pet does not defend its food, since feeding an adult dog can turn into a serious problem for you.

When to start and how to educate

Find out how to train the Alabai in advance, and this activity will soon bear fruit. You need to start training your puppy from an early age. Usually the baby goes to a new family when he is two months old. From this date it is recommended to start training. To raise a dog competently, you need to learn how to behave correctly yourself.

Since Alabai are considered very capricious and independent animals, they do not make much contact with people who are prone to fussiness, impatience and the habit of speaking in nervous, raised tones. With such a creature you need to be confident, calm and unshakable: only in this case will the baby accept new authority and begin to obey him unquestioningly. However, you will have to work hard on this.

It is worth continuing the development of the puppy and teaching it new commands only after the pet has recognized you as the leader and began to obey.

As a rule, training methods include three techniques:

  • encouragement;
  • compulsion;
  • prohibition.

With the first method, everything is quite simple: for following a command, the dog receives some kind of treat. You should resort to coercion if the Alabai simply refuses to follow your instructions. The prohibition is necessary in order to stop the dog. However, you should not overuse the latter method, otherwise the animal will stop making decisions on its own.

Training methods

Training an Alabai puppy should be done gradually. You need to move on to the next command only when the animal fulfills the already learned orders well. The owner must remember that training an Alabai puppy will take a little more time than training other dogs, since the Central Asian will spend a long time thinking about all the commands offered by a person. But he will remember them for the rest of his life and will carry them out unquestioningly in the future.

It is better to teach a dog commands in a calm environment, when nothing interferes with the process. The owner should be alone in the room; the presence of distractions should also be excluded: toys, other people, TV, sounds, etc.

The entire process of education should be based on 3 principles: encouragement, coercion, prohibition. When rewarding, you need to praise the animal and give it a treat. Coercion is necessary when the puppy refuses to follow an order. The consequence of refusal is unpleasant sensations in the form of shaking or harshness of the voice. Having remembered this, the dog will follow commands not in the hope of receiving a reward, but in order to avoid negative emotions.

Prohibition includes all undesirable actions that the puppy must stop on the orders of a person. But here you need to remember that prohibitions cannot be used often, as the animal becomes dependent and intimidated. Even if the dog is not in an enclosure, but has the opportunity to run around the surrounding area, you need to allow it to take the initiative.

Training and teaching commands

It is very important to know how to teach a dog obedience so that following commands becomes a habit before the puppy arrives in your home, otherwise it will be difficult for you to cope with your pet in the future. First of all, you should accustom your four-legged friend to the fact that the most important command is his nickname. As soon as an Alabai hears his nickname, he should ideally immediately drop everything he’s doing and pay attention to his owner. Another significant command is “Come to me!”

You can achieve obedience by treating your pet with treats as soon as he comes to your call. At first, keep your puppy on a leash during training to prevent him from breaking loose. Otherwise, he will immediately show his tough temper. When the dog gets used to the leash, you can teach it the command “Near!”

Be sure to try to rein in your baby during a walk when he suddenly decides to chase cats or birds. It will be enough to give a small tug of the leash towards you. Soon the trained pet will understand that he will not be able to be willful, and bad habits will be eradicated immediately.

Important points in raising a puppy

There are several characteristic features in the character and behavior of Central Asian Shepherds, which you should focus on when raising a puppy:

  • In most cases, Alabais are purchased for protection, and not because they are large and formidable, but because guarding qualities are in their blood. Still, being very tiny, they try to perform this function, spreading their zeal not only to the territory, but also to the owner and his property. Showing dedication, they often demonstrate their qualities where there is no need for it. At the very beginning of such impulses, you need to stop them on the spot, otherwise later, when the puppy grows up, you will no longer be able to restrain the dog.
  • "Ugh!" – a very important command for representatives of this breed, which by nature are somewhat evil and distrustful creatures. This command will teach your pet that unreasonable aggression is bad. It is necessary to achieve unquestioning obedience and immediate implementation. This will allow you to avoid possible difficulties and dangerous moments in the future.
  • When training, you can use force by pressing on the puppy’s rump and clearly saying “Ugh!” As soon as the dog is distracted from what he started, the command must be repeated, but this time, looking into the pet’s eyes. And then you need to let him go. Did you do what was required? This means you need to reward him with a treat.
  • Alabais are dogs that live according to the laws of the pack. This means that from the first days of being in a new home, the puppy must understand that the person in charge here is the person. To do this, you should not be allowed to pull the leash forward and, as soon as possible, you will need to teach the command “Near!” To do this, you need to take a treat with you on a walk and put it in your pocket so that the puppy will definitely smell it. Shorten the leash so that the pet feels the tension. Hold the leash very close to your leg for a while and clearly pronounce the command. Having thus walked 15-20 meters, the puppy can be praised and treated with something tasty. As soon as the dog learns what is required, the leash can be loosened, and later unhooked altogether.
  • In addition, while maintaining your leadership, you should not allow your pet to enter doors, gates, first, or climb stairs.
  • You should not think that an Alabai puppy is a cutie who is not capable of offending anyone. Instincts are inherent in nature, so there is no need to doubt that he can do it if necessary! From an early age it is necessary to take him out exclusively on a leash, and later only with a muzzle. The absence of these attributes can only occur when walking in deserted places.
  • By nature, Alabai are very stubborn, so the dog owner must surpass the pet in this capacity. The dog must learn that everything a person says must be unconditionally carried out, and it doesn’t matter whether the dog wants to do it or not.
  • It doesn't matter if the puppy has to learn the command "Sit!" or his paw needs to be examined for a wound, the dog must obey unconditionally. You should not pay attention to his resistance; if necessary, use force. No matter how the pet tries to escape, the owner must calmly continue what he started.
