The burgomaster of the city of Zurich issued a decree according to which large peasant dogs were to be destroyed - they supposedly spoiled the vineyards of the nobility. However, the peasants did not agree to give up their favorites: an uprising broke out, as a result of which the burgomaster was overthrown and himself executed. The dogs remained unharmed and continued to repay their owners with sincere love and devotion.

A significant contribution to the development of the breed was made by Swiss dog breeders Strebel, Sieber, Schertenleib, Heim and others.

It was they who had to do a tremendous amount of work in selecting healthy and strong Bernese Mountain Dog puppies for breeding.

These dogs were specifically sought out in peasant farmsteads located in the foothills of the Alps, mainly in the Dürbach district.

These dogs were first presented at exhibitions in 1907. At the same time, in Switzerland, the first kennel club was founded, dedicated to the national breed - the Dürrbächler (the dog from Dürrbach).

In 1910, on the initiative of Professor Heim, the breed was renamed in a new way - “Bernese Mountain Dog”. This name is still attached to the breed.
