Hunting with a drathaar: training and training a puppy

Breed Features

Drathaar is a hunting dog. With proper upbringing, she will become a good friend and companion. She is distinguished by her calm character, self-control and ability to learn. But it is not so easy to train and train her to hunt game.

Drathaar is a hunter by nature

Drathaar is a headstrong dog, so the owner will have to put a lot of effort and patience into turning it into a worthy hunting assistant. She needs movement and exercise. This is the basis of the German cop's lifestyle.

For your information! Training a drathaar is a necessary activity, without which it suffers and wastes away.

Hunting qualities

Training Alabai at home for a puppy and an adult

The Drathaar is primarily a pointing dog. She helps her owner when hunting birds with a gun. The dog tracks quails and partridges and freezes when it detects them. A special stance is a sign that the bird has been found. Afterwards, the German cop scares away the prey, which remains only to be shot. She then looks for the wounded bird, strangles it if necessary, and brings it to the owner.

Note! When hunting a hare with a drathaar, the dog signals to the owner with his voice that the animal has been found in the forest. It also notifies that it has stopped so that the hunter can get his bearings.

What does the drathaar hunt:

  • waterfowl;
  • wild boars;
  • raccoons;
  • quail;
  • pheasants;
  • wood grouse;
  • hares;
  • foxes

The dog is able to find prey by following its blood trail. Coarse, hard hair and thick bristles help her overcome obstacles. They protect against thorns and tall grass. In addition, the bristles prevent you from freezing, and if you had to take a dip in a pond, the wool dries quickly.

A dog doesn't freeze in water

Raising a puppy

Raising a drathaar begins from childhood; training is carried out regularly with the puppy. He must understand not only basic commands, but also learn not to be afraid of anything.

Training a Rottweiler at home

Some dogs are excellent swimmers from birth, while others look warily towards a body of water. Don't despair, training a Drahthaar puppy takes time. The dog needs to realize that you can move not only on land.

He must become familiar with the shots so that he can react calmly to them in the future. You need to get used to them gradually, so that the dog first hears an unfamiliar noise from a distance. Be sure to watch his reaction. If he gets scared, then you need to try to distract him at this moment.

The puppy must trust the owner and not be afraid of him. Contact is needed between them in order to act harmoniously on the hunt.

Note! It is important to praise the dog, encourage it, forget about rudeness, show care and be affectionate.

Commands and rules for their submission

You need to train a drathaar without forgetting to encourage and encourage. Do not skimp on praise and treats for your pet.

"Aport"

Cane Corso training at home

“Fetch” is one of the most important commands for a hunting dog. In order for the animal to master it, you need to act consistently:

  1. Give an object to the teeth so that the dog carries it for a while.
  2. Then try to take it away.
  3. Ask to bring it to the owner.

It is necessary for the dog to understand that he is required to carry, and not play. Therefore, it is important that the object is in its mouth. When he masters the exercise, for example, with a stick, you need to offer a stuffed bird. He must also understand that the prey must be delivered to the owner, and not eaten.

"To me"

They try to introduce pets to the “come” command first. First you need to repeat it, adding the dog's name. Do not pronounce rudely, slightly raising the tone. When he remembers and begins to respond to the owner’s voice, try to voice it exactly as a command. The main thing is that the animal is not afraid, so punishment cannot be used if the animal resists execution.

"It is forbidden"

“You can’t” should be said when the dog does something forbidden. He must understand that now he is required to stop, to abandon what he had planned.

Important! You cannot scold a dog for an action that has already been committed; it will not be able to realize what it is to blame for. This will only undermine the drathaar's trust in its owner.

Maintenance and care

drathaar

When keeping a drathaar, the owner should pay attention to some points:

  • Drathaars are not picky eaters. The dog owner can choose what to feed the dog: natural products or specialized dog food, the main thing is that the food is complete and properly balanced. Drathaars are not prone to allergies.
  • When feeding the Drahthaar with natural foods, keep in mind that the Drahthaar's diet must contain foods high in protein to maintain the dog at a high level of physical activity. The drathaar's diet should consist of 2/3 meat and 1/3 cereals and vegetables. The best fruits and vegetables to give to the drathaar are: apples, pears, zucchini, and greens. It is advisable to include in the diet: cottage cheese, kefir, eggs and fish.
  • It is important not to overfeed the drathaar; monitor the weight of the drathaar, it should be between 27-32 kg. The portion size of the food you give your dog depends on the conditions of detention and the load; a street dog should receive more food.
  • The Drathaar is a breed of dog that has a pronounced seasonal shedding. It is important to properly care for the drathaar's coat. Once every two weeks, the drathaar needs to be combed with a special brush or massage mitten. The drathaar's beard and mustache should be washed as they become dirty.
  • The drathaar should be bathed no more than once a month. Bathing too often will cause your dog's coat to lose its natural shine due to the loss of the fatty coating that protects the dog's coat from dirt. When bathing the Drahthaar, it is advisable to use unscented shampoo so that the dog does not lose its hunting sense.
  • Drahthaar's floppy ears require constant attention from the dog owner. They should always be dry and clean. Dirt from the ears is removed with a cotton swab or damp cotton pad. If you notice that your Drahthaara is scratching its ears a lot, contact your veterinarian, your dog may have ear mites.
  • Watch the drathaar's eyes, they should be shiny and clean. To care for your eyes, you can wipe them with a cotton pad soaked in weak tea. If the drathaar's eyes are very watery or purulent, the dog should be taken to the vet immediately.
  • In the summer, the drathaar's claws wear down on the ground on long walks; in winter, it may be necessary to trim the claws with a nail clipper once a month.
  • The Drathaar is an active and energetic breed of dog, which finds it very difficult to live in a cramped city apartment. The ideal conditions for him are a private house with a large local area. Some owners keep drathaars in an apartment; in this case, it is important to provide the dog with physical exercise and be sure to take it out hunting.

drathaar

  • A Drathaar living in an outdoor enclosure must have a canopy that protects the dog from the sun and precipitation, and a kennel. The booth must be double-layered, with a vestibule; the dimensions of the booth must be such that the dog can stand in it at full height.
  • In severe frosts, below -25 degrees, take the drathaar to a warm room.
  • Drathaar needs long, serious walks; just a walk in the yard will not work. One walk should last at least 2-3 hours, the rest at least 20-30 minutes. It is advisable to accompany the walk with activities with the dog: run with the dog, throw a ball. Without serious physical activity, everything will result in the destruction of the apartment, aggression and stress from boredom.
  • When walking in places where there is a possibility of encountering cats or other domestic animals, the Drahthaar should walk on a leash.
  • The Drathaar is a dog created for hunting; if the owner cannot hunt with him, then he needs to find some kind of alternative that replaces hunting.
  • The drathaar, like any dog, should have its own personal place where the dog should feel like a master. When the dog is in its place, no one should disturb or disturb it.

Drilling for prey

Training a drathaar on a bird or large animals is not an easy task. It is necessary to teach the dog commands in order to establish communication with the owner. When he notices an animal, he must give a certain sign, and then act on commands.

Boar harvest

A pointing dog can track a wild boar. Training is to ensure that the dog restrains the animal by barking; it should not bite it or attack in order to stall for time until the owner appears.

For your information! Drathaar is not very dexterous and resourceful when compared with a husky, and can also show aggression towards a wild animal. Here the forces are not equal, such a fight can end sadly for the pet.

Boar hunting

On waterfowl

Waterfowl hunting should be fun for your dog. You can't force her to go into a pond. Usually the dogs collect wounded and killed birds in the evening. They are not driven into the water after each shot. In addition, it is not always easy to catch stricken prey that is trying to hide from its pursuer.

Note! If after a quarter of an hour the dog fails to catch the duck, it is worth postponing until the morning. Otherwise, the German cop will become exhausted and lose interest in such events.

At the end of winter, you should not let your dog out on the ice; closer to the center of the reservoir it is thinner; if the dog falls through, he will not be able to get out on his own. In addition, it moves slowly in winter. Snow sticks to your paws and you have to stop often to get rid of it.

For pheasant

When hunting pheasants, drathaar is helped by self-control and measured actions:

  1. The dog notices the bird and makes a stance.
  2. Scares a pheasant on command so that it takes off before being shot. The main thing is that he then remains motionless so that the bullet does not hit him.
  3. Brings the prey to the owner, again after the command.

On the black grouse

Drathaar, having discovered a black grouse, performs a stance, letting the owner know that prey is nearby. Usually it does not run far from people, so its signal is immediately noticeable. It happens that the dog is at a distance from the owner, and he has to return to report the find. After the command, he scares the black grouse so that he flies up and lies down on the ground so as not to get hit. Failures occur if the bird runs into tall grass where it cannot be seen to take aim. If they managed to shoot it, the drathaar, after a command, goes after the prey to deliver it to its owner.

Hunting for wood grouse in autumn

Capercaillie is a desirable prey for any hunter. In autumn, birds are not so easy to catch; they gain experience and quickly notice movement around them.

Capercaillie

Drathaar acts carefully and slowly, so there is a chance that the capercaillie will not fly away. Of course, a lot depends on the hunter, whether he will notice in time that the pet has already made a stance.

Important! You need to find the wood grouse before it disappears, sensing something is wrong.

  1. Andrey 05/23/2015 at 15:43 I have been reading about this breed for a long time. and I increasingly want to buy a drathaar for hunting hares. But in my city there is not much choice among breeders. And most without pedigree. Is the pedigree so important for this dog? Or can I myself raise the puppy to be an excellent hunting assistant?
    Reply Elena. 10/23/2015 at 10:49

    Hello Andrei. Any puppy must be taken with a pedigree, especially the Drathaar. Without documents, you will not be able to evaluate the dog’s appearance at exhibitions or take part in hunting dog competitions. When they buy a puppy from us, almost everyone tells me it’s only for hunting, and when they come to choose, they take the most beautiful puppy. As a rule, puppies without documents may not be purebred, and when they are babies this cannot be immediately determined. You can raise a puppy yourself, there is a lot of literature and the main assistant is the Internet, watch the training video. At the moment we have Drahthaar puppies in our kennel. Dear Andrey. Transforming a puppy into a cop is a very serious question that requires you to understand for what purpose the puppy is being purchased. Hare hunting requires from you not only desire but also experience in setting up a cop. My advice is to contact the regional section of cops, gain knowledge via the Internet, find an experienced handler .

    I adopted the Drathaar puppy because of my son. The child really liked the puppy, my husband and I consulted and decided to take it, even though before that we had a Labrador and we don’t have any hunters; naturally, we don’t own a Narva hunting dog, not to mention Drathaar. We've had the puppy for almost a month. They took it without a pedigree, the owner did not record the mating, even though both parents had an excellent pedigree and both were excellent hunters. Our girl is very smart despite the fact that she is only 4 months old. She covers commands on the fly, is easy to learn, and apparently she inherited the hunter’s instinct from her parents, picks up the scent perfectly, senses prey from a distance. Especially chickens :-)) Now my husband and I perfectly understand the words of the embryo - Well, now you will have to become hunters))). And it’s true that the husband begins to switch from fishing to hunting. I want to say that Drathaar is not only an excellent hunter, but also an excellent, devoted friend, an excellent guard, and no matter how crazy it may sound, he is also an excellent nanny. She plays wonderfully with children and with each child in different ways, studying character, and even the child herself. And leaving her at the store with the stroller, she did not allow anyone to approach the child, grinning angrily and growling while looking into the stroller to see if the child had woken up. I recommend this breed to everyone, not only hunters but also people who love animals!

    How to overcome fears

    Drathaar is a fearless dog, but this needs to be worked on from childhood. The dog should calmly react to sharp sounds, pops, and not be afraid of water and dense thickets. Without these skills he will not be able to become a good hunter.

    You need to get used to hunting gradually

    You need to gradually accustom your animal to water. The owner needs to go into the pond and call the dog to follow him. If she gets scared, don’t scold her, but stand there for a while and calmly leave. You cannot put pressure on the puppy or raise your voice. The main thing is to guide them so that they intuitively understand what is required of them. He won't be able to repeat it mindlessly. A game will help him get into the water; you can throw a ball or a stick and ask him to bring the object back. Gradually he will begin to go further into the water and learn to swim.

    Important! Only after overcoming fears will it be possible to train a drathaar. You need to be patient and reward for success, not scold for failure.

    Hunting with a drathaar should bring pleasure not only to the owner, but also to the dog. Therefore, it is important to establish understanding with the animal, take care of it and not be rude. You cannot raise your hand to the dog or shout at him, otherwise he will not trust the owner, experiencing fear when communicating with him.

    Today I will introduce you to an unusual person whose name is Denis. I know Denis personally, we have one common hobby - YouTube. When I first saw Denis, I couldn’t believe my eyes that this was possible. The fact is that Denis is 31 years old and does not correspond to his age. He looks like he's 15-16 years old at most, but it's not as simple as it seems at first glance. After talking with Denis, I learned that he is an avid hunter, fisherman and mushroom picker. Connection with nature and hunting come first for him. Life in Slavyanka is very different from life in Vladivostok. Slavyanka is primarily a resort area. People from all over Primorye come here to relax. In Slavyanka you can always relax your soul and body, it’s especially cool when your faithful friend is with you everywhere. Denis has two hunting dogs of the Drathaar breed. One is called Jim, he is already 12 years old, and the other is called Volker. Volker is still very young and is just learning the basics of professional hunting, but Jim can be called a professional with complete confidence. For 12 years in hunting, he has proven himself to be the best and that’s an understatement. Jim is a hunting drathaar from God!

    Although they say that drathaars have a furious temperament, Jim is calm by nature. He treats Volker tolerantly, because for him he is still a child. The most important authority for Jim is Denis's father. Andrei Ivanovich is a professional hunter and he passed on his most valuable skills in hunting and fishing to his son Denis. From an early age he took Denis to the taiga; his love for nature began from an early age. After all, it is in nature that Denis feels invigorated and recharged with the energy of the forest. This will be very difficult for a city dweller to understand. Whoever has a connection with nature is truly happy. At such moments, you can forget about civilization for a while. The forest gives a person a lot - it’s not only berries, mushrooms, poultry and animal meat. The forest helps to restore your strength, strengthens you spiritually and physically. Let Denis himself tell us about all this. For as long as I can remember in my life, nature has always occupied the most important place for me. Even when I was not on the right path and there were moments that were not very true in my life, hunting, fishing and just the forest were still an outlet in my heart. Moments arise in my memory when I was 3-5 years old. We lived in the north of the Amur region, where I was born. My father took me to the taiga very often. At that time, the taiga was truly alive and interesting. There were much more animals than there are now. The forest seemed big and fabulous to me. Due to my age, I could not walk much, so my father put me standing in a backpack and walked with me. Well, I stood proudly and turned my head around with interest getting acquainted with the sounds of the forest. Various birds flew everywhere. I clearly heard the cry of a wood grouse, a cuckoo, and a woodpecker knocking on a tree. All the sounds of the forest were intertwined into one whole. Then there were trips for blueberries and lingonberries. Catching pike and catfish in the reservoir, going for mushrooms. Each time I learned more and more about nature. Time passed and I grew up. Then my family and I moved to Primorsky Krai. I went to school. For me, hunting and fishing still came first in life. Everything in my life has changed a lot. The Far East has a completely different nature. Locations, landscapes, fauna, flora have changed. The Far East has very rich nature. The indigenous people don’t even understand how lucky they are and what forest resources they have. Wild grapes, quiche, rosehip, Ussuri tiger, Far Eastern leopard, wild boar, sika deer, roe deer, pheasant, wild ducks. The list of all the riches of the Primorsky Territory can be endless. There are also more than enough sea and river resources. The nature of the Far East is rare and unique. There were many hunting dogs in our family. Fox Terrier, English Cocker Spaniels. Then after the death of the last dog there was a long pause. A dog in a family is not just part of the family - it is a friend.

    A dog is an integral help for the hunter with whom he works; together they are one whole. Specifically, I realized this when we got the drathaar. German Wirehaired Pointer. At that time, I was already an adult and soon filled out documents to purchase and then carry weapons. Jim is now 13 years old and a professor in his field. He is admired by all our acquaintances and fellow hunters who had the chance to hunt with him. There were cases when the hunt did not go to the place. The game didn't fly. People were just drinking, relaxing, and shooting at cans. Sometimes it was enough to walk with Jim through the bushes near the water to find game. Before this, other hunters hunted here and they left their prey. Jim got other people's live wounded animals that were not found. And we, with clean trunks, went home with the spoils. As for the gun, my father gave it to me. He went hunting with it for 30 years and gave it to me until I grew up. Having received the documents, I accepted this family gift from him. I love this gun very much, I know it like the back of my hand. This 12 gauge over/under shotgun is in excellent condition. I take care of it to this day and don’t want to buy another one yet. Fishing takes second place in my life.

    I really like winter fishing, but I also really like to go fishing in the warm season. The forest for me is my own world. I get a lot of energy here. Hunting for me is passion. Every time you get ready to go to the forest or to the swamp, you wait with bated breath as you sit in the morning dawn, breathe in the air, listen to the silence. Literally a moment and you are already lifting the heavy barrels of the gun and leading the bird in flight and looking at the front sight. Shot! The smell of gunpowder! Excitement until your hands tremble and sparkle in your eyes! You give the command to Jim, who is also shaking, either from the cold or from impatience. Give it to him, you'll tell him. He happily dives into the water and after a couple of minutes carries the game into your hand. Then you drink the most delicious tea over the fire. Talk about the last hunt. Sweet languor and in these moments you understand that you are living and you don’t seem to need anything else. And how much anger there was from fatigue and mistakes. Calluses on hands and feet. Bruises all over my shoulder because I have to shoot three days in a row when goose and duck are in season. You will collect water in the swamps. Lack of sleep. I have to get up at 5 o'clock. Otherwise you won’t be in time for dawn.

    Exhausted, you swear that you won’t go hunting anymore, why is all this necessary! You are angry in your hearts at everything around you! But next time you’re already looking forward to the hunting season and are looking forward to flying in your soul, because you won’t be able to live without it! A year ago, I got myself a drathaar with great desire. He doesn't have bad blood. He started doing pheasant feather stands at 2 months. We often visited the forest with him and not only. But we only found him hunting in the autumn a couple of times. He had the opportunity to get game from the water for the first time. I'm very pleased with it. We spent the first six months on the river and I taught him fetch from the water. This is my first dog and I have a lot of mistakes. He is very spoiled, which is my fault. And sometimes I get angry at myself and at him, because he doesn’t hear me. He does a lot of wrong things that would ruin the hunt and also problems in everyday life. A young dog is always difficult.

    But we must endure and educate. Carrot and stick, that's all. Of course he knows how to approach me. I give him some slack and spoil him, because for me he is still a child. But I think, having matured, he will give me many happy years of hunting and just joy as a faithful friend. This is Denis's story. I would also like to add that Denis really loves picking mushrooms. Mushrooms are also a passion and picking mushrooms brings great pleasure. There are quite a lot of mushroom places in Slavyanka. Just admire how much you can collect at one time.

    In addition to forests and lakes, there is also our beloved Sea of Japan. We Far Easterners cannot live without the sea.

    In the summer, Denis dives for mussels and sea urchin. How cool it is to go out and relax by the sea, eat seafood, and have a fun time. Nowadays, young people are very much attached to the city. Not everyone will go into the forest to pick mushrooms or hunt. A city dweller is used to buying everything at the store. The most a city dweller can do is go to a barbecue in the suburbs. Of course not everyone is like that. There are still people who live by nature. The forest and the sea feed us; even now, in our difficult times, nature is favorable to us. Well, that's all, dear friends. It was a story about a little hunter from the Primorsky Territory. Let's wish our hero many years of joy, and most importantly, successful hunting!
