What are helminthiases?

Worm infestations are common in domestic dogs and cats - intestinal parasites are found even in pets that do not go outside and do not interact with other animals. Helminth eggs enter the gastrointestinal tract:

• on a walk - with street mud or water from puddles/street ponds;
• with food – raw fish/meat;
• upon contact with a sick animal;
• through intermediate hosts - ticks and fleas.

Common symptoms of helminthiasis are:

• causeless loss of appetite;
• digestive disorders - vomiting, diarrhea or constipation;
• bloating;
• decrease in body weight with a constant amount of food;
• lethargy, low physical activity;
• itching and rash in the anal area;
• difficulty swallowing, hiccups/cough;
• dull coat and excretion of helminths in feces.

These signs are nonspecific; the presence of parasites can only be confirmed by testing at a veterinary clinic.

Helminth infections are dangerous because they can:

• proceed without pronounced symptoms, “undermining” the health of an adult pet for a long time or disrupting the development of a puppy/kitten;
• give a clear clinical picture, making it difficult to identify other diseases.

“Unscheduled” destruction of existing parasites is necessary:

• 14 days before vaccination or surgery;
• when worms are detected in excrement;
• after eliminating fleas/ticks that carry helminth eggs;
• 90 days before mating (taking into account the expected date of vaccination).

Instructions for use for cats

The method of administration, selection of dosage and treatment regimen depend on the form of release of the drug. Neither form requires a starvation diet or the use of laxatives.

Dirofen tablets

To prevent worms, only 1 application is required (once a quarter). For treatment, you need to use it twice (with a break of 2 weeks). The fact is that it is not so easy to detect helminthiasis at home; sometimes you can see parasites only after using the medicine.

The drug can be fed to a cat in several ways:

• forcibly (put the medicine on the root of the tongue and force the cat to swallow it);
• crush and mix with wet food or drinking water;
• resort to using a tablet dispenser (a device in the form of a syringe).

Most cats sense deception (the smell of food will not mask the medicine), so the second method works extremely rarely. Not every owner has a tablet dispenser, and cats are sometimes afraid of them. I forcefully give pills to my cat. The main thing is not to yell at the cat, not to pull it or hit it. Usually I put her on my lap, open her jaw with one hand, and with the other I lower the medicine onto the root of the tongue (close to the throat). The swallowing reflex does its job, the cat doesn’t even have time to get scared. A little secret: during this procedure I talk to the cat in the same way as during feeding.

How to use the suspension

The suspension, like the tablets, needs to be used only 1 time. The exception is a strong degree of infestation (in such cases, the procedure must be repeated after 10 days). Prophylactic use should be carried out once a quarter.

A single dose of the suspension is given using a syringe in the morning.

The suspension can be mixed with wet food, but I usually give it without food. I squeeze the medicine directly into the cat’s mouth (from the side, close to the root of the tongue - this way the cat will not choke and swallow the medicine automatically). After the suspension I give wet food. This prevents the cat from wanting to spit out the unpleasant liquid. By the way, if you don’t give food after the suspension, the animal will drool, since the medicine is sometimes astringent.

Pastes

The paste is used in the same way as the suspension:

• once;
• preferably in the morning feeding;
• using a dispensing syringe or forcibly;
• in case of severe infestation, deworming should be repeated after 10 days;
• The dosage is calculated based on the cat’s body weight - 1 ml per 1 kg of weight.

Features of use in pregnant cats and kittens

Dirofen tablets, suspension and paste can be used by pregnant cats only in the second half of pregnancy (20 days before the expected date of birth)

Deworming is recommended to be done under the supervision of a veterinarian and with extreme caution. For cats that have already given birth or are nursing, Dirofen can be used 15–20 days after birth.

The anthelmintic can also be used to deworm kittens, but not earlier than three weeks of age.

Main components

Pyrantel pamoate is a compound of the pyrimidine group, its mechanism of action is based on blocking the transmission of nerve impulses at neuromuscular synapses by depolarizing the membranes of muscle cells, which causes paralysis of the muscular system of nematodes; pyrantel is poorly absorbed, which ensures its prolonged effect on helminths in the intestines; excreted from the body mainly unchanged (93%) in feces.

Praziquantel is a compound of the pyrazinisoquinoline group, active against gastrointestinal cestodes at all phases of development. By increasing the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca2+), it causes membrane depolarization, muscle contraction and tegument destruction, which leads to the death of helminths and promotes their elimination from the animal's body. The compound is rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, reaching a maximum concentration in the blood plasma after 1-3 hours, reversibly binds to serum proteins (70-80%), is partially metabolized in the liver, re-excreted into the intestine, and excreted from the body mainly in the urine. (up to 80%) within 24 hours.

Operating principle

Dirofen belongs to complex anthelmintic drugs. The drug is effective against different types of round and tape parasites. Its wide spectrum of action is due to its combined composition:

• Praziquantel
  increases the permeability of cell membranes, which leads to muscle contraction and death of parasites. The active substance not only destroys worms, but also promotes their removal from the body naturally. This eliminates the need to do cleansing enemas or give the animal laxatives. It reaches its maximum concentration in the blood in just 1-3 hours, and the substance is removed from the body within a day.
• Pyrantel pamoate
  is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream. It effectively destroys worms in the intestines. The principle of its action is based on blocking the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of parasites. It is excreted from the body along with feces, mostly unchanged.
• Febantel
  differs in its principle of action, but is not inferior in effectiveness. The substance disrupts the energy processes of parasites, in particular the production of enzymes and the absorption of glucose - a source of energy for any living organism. It is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolized in the liver, after which it penetrates the intestines along with bile.

The suspension and paste contain pumpkin oil, which has an anthelmintic effect. In addition, a component of natural origin improves stool and helps restore the intestinal mucosa damaged by helminths.

If the recommended doses are observed, the anthelmintic does not cause embryotoxic and teratogenic effects, that is, it does not have a negative effect on the development of the offspring. The components of the drug do not accumulate in the body and do not cause addiction even with frequent use.

Release forms

Dirofen is offered for oral use in three forms: suspension, paste, tablets. When choosing, it is necessary to base your pet’s preferences, its age, and also take into account the convenience of feeding the drug.

Dirofen suspension

The liquid form of the medicine is a yellowish solution with a viscous, thick consistency. The suspension is bottled in plastic bottles. The package includes a syringe for dosing the drug.

The anthelmintic effect of the suspension is due to two active compounds: praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate. Auxiliary components include food additives (E211, E951, E952), carboxymethylcellulose, pumpkin seed oil. The last ingredient improves the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, restores the mucous membrane and supplies the body with useful substances.

Pills

The solid form of the drug is available in the form of round, light yellow tablets. On one side there are perpendicular marks that make it easier to divide the tablet into two or four parts. The “AS” logo is embossed on the other side. Capsules are packaged in cell paper bags or plastic jars.

The activity of the drug against worms is due to a combination of three substances: febantel, praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate. The homogeneous fraction of Dirofen tablet powder is supplemented with lactose, food additive E572, talc, microcrystalline cellulose.

Dirofen paste

The medicine in appearance is a pasty mass of a light yellow hue. The drug is packaged in polymer syringes. This form is convenient because the syringe helps to dose the product, determining the required amount in milligrams. The active compounds in the paste are the same as in the suspension: praziquantel and pyrantel. As supporting components, the paste contains pumpkin oil, as well as cyclomate saccharin, aspartame, and carboxymethylcellulose.

Methods of application

Dirofen in any form of release is used by animals individually, in the morning feeding with a small amount of food or treat. No preliminary fasting diet or use of laxatives is required.

Application depends on the purpose and type of infestation detected. For prevention and before vaccination/mating, the medicine is given once.

Deworming in two stages is necessary:

• for prevention in places where animals are kept in groups;
• in the presence of a confirmed diagnosis (with an exact definition of the pathogen - round/flat, mixed) and pronounced symptoms of invasion.

The interval between the first and second stages should be 14 days, but the amount of treatment will differ if:

• nematodes - 1 time a day, then repeated one-day use after 14 days;
• for cestodias and combined invasions - 1 time per day for 3 days, after 14 days the three-day dose is repeated.

To achieve a therapeutic effect, it is recommended to follow dosages and treatment regimens. If a scheduled dose is missed, the drug is given as soon as possible, without changing the dose or interval between doses in the future.

Instructions for use of the drug "Dirofen" for cats

The presented product is prescribed to cats whose age has reached three weeks from the moment of birth. The purposes of this remedy may be the following:

• medicinal;
• preventive.

In other words, in the first case, the drug is taken to destroy parasites that have settled inside your cat’s organs. In the second case, the drug is taken simply for the sake of prevention, in case eggs or larvae of worms have already entered the animal, but you have not yet discovered the consequences of this infestation.

The product can be used against helminths of various forms

Indications for use of the drug not for the sake of preventive measures will be as follows:

• The drug is taken in the presence of nematodes (invasion of nematode worms inside the body);
• It is also necessary to take the drug for cestodes (when colonized by cestode worms);

The danger of having parasites inside the body of cats and other animals is due to the following factors:

• helminths, living inside a specific organ, destroy it from the inside, leading to irreversible changes, and, as a result, the cessation of the organs’ ability to function normally;
• very often worms eat useful nutrients that your pet needs, which enter the cat’s body with food, thereby weakening the animal’s body and leading to the development of other diseases;
• Living inside the animal's body, the worms secrete so-called waste products, which are highly toxic, and poison all organ systems of the animal, gradually killing it.

Contraindications

A contraindication for use is individual intolerance to the components of the drug (including a history of).

Dirofen should not be used by emaciated animals, those suffering from infectious diseases and convalescent animals; it should also not be used by females in the first half of pregnancy, puppies, kittens, rodents and ferrets under 3 weeks of age.

For pregnant females, if necessary, the drug is prescribed 3 weeks before the expected birth with caution, under the supervision of a veterinarian, for lactating females - 2-3 weeks after birth.

Dirofen paste should not be used simultaneously with piperazine and cholinesterase inhibitors. The drug is not intended for use in productive animals.

COMPOSITION AND RELEASE FORM Dirofen tablets are available in two dosages:

— For cats and dogs (fenbendazole – 250 mg/g, pyrantel pamoate – 75 mg/g), auxiliary components;

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES Dirofen tablets belong to combined anthelmintic drugs. The drug has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic effect on all phases of development of round and tape helminths parasitizing dogs and cats, including Tohocara canis, Toxocara mistax, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Trichuris vulpis, Ancylostoma caninum, Echinococcus granulosus, Alveococus multilocularis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Dipylidium caninum, Diphyllobotrium latum, Multiceps multiceps.

The mechanism of action of fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate, which are part of the drug, is based on inhibition of fumarate reductase, persistent depolarization of helminth muscle cells, disruption of energy metabolism, which causes paralysis and death of helminths and promotes their elimination from the gastrointestinal tract.

When administered orally, febendazole and pyrantel pamoate are partially absorbed in the intestine and excreted from the body mainly in feces and to a lesser extent in urine within 24 to 48 hours.

In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Dirofen tablets are classified as moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76); in recommended doses they do not have embryotoxic, teratogenic or sensitizing effects. In case of increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug and the appearance of allergic reactions, its use is stopped and the animal is prescribed antihistamines and symptomatic drugs. OVERDOSE In case of a significant overdose, the animal may experience a depressed state, refusal to feed, excessive salivation, and gastrointestinal disorders. In these cases, general measures are used aimed at removing the drug from the body.

INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER MEDICINES Dirofen tablets should not be used simultaneously with drugs containing piperazine and drugs that inhibit cholinesterase.

STORAGE CONDITIONS Store the drug in the manufacturer's sealed packaging, in a dry place, protected from light, separately from food and feed at a temperature of -10 °C to 20 °C.

Dirofen tablets should be stored out of the reach of children.

SHELF LIFE 3 years. Do not use the drug after the expiration date.

When using Dirofen in accordance with these instructions, side effects and complications in animals, as a rule, are not observed. Dirofen tablets are a combined anthelmintic for animals (International nonproprietary name: fenbendazole + pyrantel pamoate). 1 g of tablets for dogs and cats contains 250 mg of fenbendazole and 75 mg of pyrantel pamoate, for puppies and kittens - 50 mg of fenbendazole and 15 mg of pyrantel pamoate, respectively, as well as auxiliary components. In appearance it is a tablet for oral use. Pack 6 tablets in a laminated blister; each cardboard box contains 1 blister and stickers for a veterinary passport.

Doses and method of administration

Dirofen tablets are administered orally to animals once individually in the morning feeding with a small amount of food (in a piece of sausage, meat, minced meat or porridge) at a dose of 1 tablet of the drug per 1 kg of weight for puppies and kittens, 1 tablet per 5 kg for adult dogs and cats weight. A preliminary fasting diet and the use of laxatives when using the drug are not required. For preventive purposes, deworming is carried out once every 3 months, as well as before each vaccination. Therapeutic measures against nematodes and cestodes are carried out according to indications. In case of severe infestation, Dirofen tablets can be reused after 10 days

In very rare cases, with increased individual sensitivity to the drug and overdose in animals, refusal of food, depression, increased salivation, vomiting, allergic reactions and dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract are possible. In these cases, the animal is prescribed desensitizing and symptomatic therapy.
