Painless sterilization of dogs and cats

Sterilization of a dog at the Alisavet veterinary clinic means:

  • easy awakening after sterilization due to inhalation anesthesia;
  • surgery under sterile conditions without introducing infection into the body, so antibiotics are not needed;
  • long-acting painkiller, so no injections at home;
  • during cavity sterilization, a cosmetic suture is applied that does not need to be processed or removed;
  • during laparoscopic sterilization, mini punctures are made, which is less traumatic for the dog;
  • punctures are sealed with skin glue, or an internal suture is applied, which does not need to be processed or removed;
  • no repeated visits to the clinic after the operation - within a day the dog will forget that anything was done to it.

In honor of the holidays, we are giving two gifts:

  1. Postoperative blanket according to the pet’s weight (since in the first day the dog can lick the puncture sites);
  2. Nail trimming.

To save your time, look at the cost of sterilization and sign up your pet for surgery

Sterilizing your dog will relieve you of problems such as:

  • constant search and purchase of disposable panties of the right size during the period of heat;
  • damaged bed linen and carpets from unpleasant smelling marks;
  • bites from persistent males that you have to constantly drive away from the bitch while walking;
  • unplanned pregnancy of a dog during the summer season;
  • financial expenses in the veterinary clinic to monitor the general condition of a pregnant pet;
  • increased attention to the dog and newborns in the first couple of months after birth;
  • wasting time selling or placing puppies in good hands;
  • expensive dog handler services due to dog aggression - after sterilization the pet will become calmer and friendlier;
  • treatment of the dog for possible diseases of the reproductive organs in the future;
  • early loss of a pet - according to scientific data, those dogs that are sterilized on time live longer.

When can I bring my dog in for sterilization?

Scientific research has established that, if there is an urgent need, sterilization can be carried out from 2 months of age until old age (depending on the average life span of a particular breed). However, there is some common sense. If you do not find anything related to your situation in the list below, then your dog can be spayed before the 3rd heat.

The operation should be done as soon as possible if:

  • On a walk, you often let your dog run without a leash;
  • the dog does not yet know the commands and does not come running to you when you call;
  • the pet lives in the country and moves freely outside the fence;
  • There is no longer a neutered dog at home, and breeding is not part of your plans.

Sterilization of dogs – laparoscopy or abdominal... which is better?

Previously, sterilization of dogs was carried out only in the form of abdominal surgery, making impressive incisions and applying many stitches, which required special care for 10-14 days and subsequent removal. During this period, antibiotic injections were given. Problems for the owner were caused not only by the stitches and injections, but also by the general condition of the dog - the post-operative painful period (it was difficult for the pet to get up, eat and walk).

A few years later, the surgical method was improved - surgeons, if possible, make a mini-incision and apply a cosmetic suture, which does not need to be processed or removed. However, the recovery period is still not very pleasant for the pet.

Laparoscopic sterilization of a cat at Alisavet

Since 2021, Alisavet has added new endoscopic equipment for humane sterilization of dogs using the laparoscopic method using mini punctures . Thanks to the LigaSure bipolar ligation technology from B.BRAUN AESCULAP® CAIMAN®, the ovaries and uterus are now removed by cutting the tissue while sealing the blood vessels, so there is no need to apply internal sutures - this eliminates even the slightest bleeding.

The difficult postoperative period is a thing of the past: no lying with a “rag” and “drunken gait” - the dog after such sterilization does not feel pain, eats well and leads its normal lifestyle.

Laparoscopy is a modern and safe way for pets to remove reproductive organs:

  • no incisions required;
  • there will be no excruciating pain after surgery;
  • no seams (special glue is used to connect the skin or an internal suture is applied that does not need to be removed);
  • Antibiotics are not prescribed after sterilization (mini punctures ensure maximum sterility).

Is it necessary to prepare a dog for sterilization?

Needed. Preoperative preparation is important for any dog, regardless of breed. The examination will reduce possible risks during the administration of anesthesia.

Before sterilization, a young dog without established pathologies undergoes an electrocardiogram (ECG) and receives its interpretation from a cardiologist. If no heart problems are detected, then additional examination (blood tests, cardiac echo) can be carried out only for medical examination.

However, if the dog has a genetic breed predisposition to heart disease, has chronic diseases, or is over 3 years old, then before sterilization a detailed examination is carried out: ECG, cardiac ECHO, blood donation for general and biochemical tests, and sometimes x-rays.

You can refuse preliminary diagnostic procedures, but then the responsibility for the dog’s health falls on your shoulders, since the surgeon is forced to perform an operation on an unexamined animal.

The dog should not be fed 10-12 hours before surgery (water is freely available)

What is endoscopic sterilization of cats and dogs

Endoscopic sterilization of cats and dogs is one of the modern methods of sterilization surgery, which is carried out using a medical or veterinary endoscope and with minimal surgical trauma.

Endoscopes are optical devices that can be of different types, for example, rigid, flexible or video endoscopes, they are used in medicine and veterinary medicine, in a wide variety of surgical practices.

Endoscope

For example, they help with diagnostics, research, removal of foreign bodies, taking biomaterials, assessing the condition of internal organs and performing operations, including endoscopic sterilization of cats.

The difference between sterilization of animals using an endoscope and the classical method is only the method of access during the operation; removal of the ovaries or ovaries and uterus in cats or dogs is carried out in both cases, without fail, in order to achieve the necessary effect on the animal’s body.

How is endoscopic sterilization of animals done?

Preparation for endoscopic surgery

It all starts in the same way as during a standard operation, with the cat or dog first receiving premedication (preparation for anesthesia), and then general anesthesia. Before the operation, preparation is required, and, if necessary, taking tests and conducting studies such as an echogram of the heart. Only healthy animals that are suitable in age, in good health and in good health are allowed to undergo surgery.

Endoscopic sterilization

After the surgical area has been prepared, the veterinarian surgeon makes a small puncture through which the sterilization itself is performed. An endoscope is inserted into the animal's abdominal cavity through a special tube. It is a long flexible rod, inside of which there is a small video camera and an LED; the doctor, watching the image broadcast from this camera on the monitor, finds the necessary organs. Thus, there is no need to make large incisions to “get” to the necessary organs, and this allows the body to recover faster and reduces many negative consequences and the likelihood of complications.

To sterilize cats using the endoscopic method, veterinarians use special instruments, clamps, and scissors for minimally invasive surgery.

Benefits of endoscopic sterilization

Endoscopic sterilization of cats and dogs has recently become popular and popular due to positive reviews from doctors and animal owners. Next, we will consider the main advantages due to which this method of sterilizing cats is considered modern and safe.

Benefits of laparoscopic sterilization

Unlike the classical method, in which an incision is made along the white line, laparoscopic sterilization has a number of undeniable advantages, among which are:

  • minimal trauma, minimal tissue trauma;
  • reduction of postoperative risks;
  • high sterility;
  • no postoperative sutures or scars;
  • quick period of rehabilitation and recovery;
  • lack of special complex postoperative care;
  • minimum pain during and after surgery.

Considering that the use of suture materials in the peritoneal cavity is minimized, the risk of developing inflammatory processes, the appearance of fistulas, and adhesions is reduced.

Important! Animal care after laparoscopic sterilization is minimal. Due to the absence of seams, there is no need for daily treatments, blankets or protective collars.

Types of dog sterilization

There are several types of dog sterilization.
The most reliable and beneficial types for the body are surgical operations, but in some cases chemical sterilization is also carried out. The main types of sterilization of bitches are:

✔️ Ovariohysterectomy

(removal of the ovaries and uterus) - carried out by us, is the most common, optimal and recommended. In this case, the uterus and ovaries are removed, the dogs are not in heat, and pathologies of the uterus and ovaries are excluded.

The following types exist, but we categorically do not recommend them:

✔️ Ovariectomy

(removal of the ovaries) is a method where only the ovaries are removed. It was previously widely used, and old-school doctors still practice this method. However, it has been proven that an abandoned uterus can have various pathologies throughout life, including malignant degeneration, so abandoning the uterus is considered inappropriate.

✔️ Partial ovariohysterectomy

– removal of the uterus and one ovary - Sometimes old-school doctors leave one ovary, supposedly to reduce the likelihood of urinary incontinence in large bitches. It has been proven that this method does not have such an effect, and leaving one ovary has a bad effect on the animal’s body.

✔️ Hysterectomy (removal of one uterus)

- rarely when the uterus is removed due to its pathologies. However, since many of the diseases are hormone-dependent, and leaving the ovaries can provoke breast tumors, cysts and other pathologies, this method is now almost never used.

✔️ Ligation of oviducts (fallopian tubes).

- a procedure that is extremely rarely used in veterinary medicine is the intersection or ligation of the fallopian tubes. That is, the bitch remains infertile, but the uterus and ovaries remain in place.

This operation is carried out at the request of owners who believe that their animals should have a full sex life, but do not want to have puppies. It is also in demand by some breeders in order to avoid competition by selling a supposedly full-fledged animal for breeding (we do not participate in fraudulent schemes and refuse in such cases).

Ligation of the fallopian tubes allows the animal to avoid unwanted pregnancy, but the pet’s hormonal levels will remain at the same level, estrus will proceed as usual, male dogs will pester her, she can run away, mate, but there will be no pregnancy. We do not recommend this method. With this method, the risks of diseases associated with hormones remain - pyometra, tumors, and transmissible venereal sarcoma, sexually transmitted from male dogs.

It is optimal to perform a classic operation.

Why does a dog need to be spayed?

Why is there a different price for dog sterilization in the price list?

The price for sterilizing a dog depends on body weight: the greater the weight, the higher the dose of anesthetic, the more expensive the cost of the operation. In addition, the price of sterilization depends on its type, the equipment used, and the degree of anesthetic risk.

Animal sterilization surgery

This type of surgery is recommended after the dog reaches six months of age, but before the onset of her first heat. Usually, they try to sterilize dogs at a young age, since a young body more easily tolerates surgical intervention, and then hormonal changes. We do:

  • open, median (along the “white line” of the abdomen) or paramedian access,
  • open, through a lateral incision (without transverse muscle dissection),
  • laparoscopy, through punctures in the peritoneum using an endoscope.

How is a dog sterilized?

Sterilization of female dogs
is carried out by a veterinary surgeon. Before the operation, a thorough examination of the animal is mandatory. If necessary, additional studies and analyzes are carried out. As with any anesthesia, a basic examination of your pet before castration is recommended.

We recommend mandatory ECHO of the heart, especially for breeds that are predisposed to cardiac pathologies: Yorkies, Chihuahuas, decorative breeds, dachshunds, Dobermans, CAO, and some others. They are required to be examined by a cardiologist before surgery.

If no contraindications to surgery are found, the dog is prescribed a preoperative starvation diet, which is observed for 12 hours. 1-2 hours before the operation, it is recommended not to give the dog water.

Preparing for sterilization surgery

Before the operation begins, the animal is subjected to premedication, the introduction of special drugs that help to endure anesthesia with minimal consequences for the body. After these manipulations, the dog is given anesthesia and the operation itself is performed, which lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours.

Our clinic also performs endoscopic sterilization of dogs.

, which is called
laparoscopic oophorectomy,
in which the doctor works with manipulators through small punctures.

There are 2 types of this operation:

1) Laparoscopic oophorectomy

– removal of the ovaries using a laparoscope (endoscopically, using minimally invasive surgery methods, while the doctor works with manipulators through small punctures of 0.2 - 0.5 cm).

2) Laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy

– removal of the horns of the uterus and ovaries using a laparoscope (endoscopically, using minimally invasive surgery methods, while the doctor works with manipulators through small punctures of 0.2 - 0.5 cm).

These are more modern methods of sterilization that exclude hands from entering the abdominal cavity. This method is only available at the branch on the street. Sculptor Mukhina, house 13. This type of sterilization is not available at home.

Important!

You can often see advertisements from unscrupulous veterinary services offering “laparoscopic sterilization at home.” These are scammers! Under the guise of laparoscopic sterilization, a conventional abdominal operation is performed with a lateral approach, instead of the traditional incision along the white line of the abdomen.

With this method of sterilization there are NO advantages over conventional surgery! Even more often, there are complications due to the fact that the uterus is pulled out through a very small incision with a special hook and sometimes, in the case of sagging tissue or the presence of inflammatory processes in it, or pregnancy at the time of the operation, ruptures and other complications can occur.

A real laparoscopic operation can ONLY take place IN A CLINIC, since the endoscopic equipment itself is heavy, stationary, bulky, and very sensitive. Don't be fooled!

Caring for your dog after sterilization

After surgery, the dog sometimes comes to its senses immediately after the end of the operation, but the anesthesia is completely removed within 24 hours.
During this time, it is advisable that the animal remains under the supervision of its owners. To prevent the seams from licking on its own, the dog is put on a special blanket, and in some cases, a blanket and a protective collar. Postoperative care consists of antibiotic therapy for 5-7 days, as well as suture treatment for 10 days. Once the sutures are removed, no special care is required.

Medical (chemical) castration

This is a temporary castration, used as an alternative to surgical castration.

The drug “Suprelorin” is used - a subcutaneous implant that contains a gradually released active substance - deslorelin, which suppresses sexual desire for a long time. Since the cost of Suprelorin depends on the euro exchange rate, the cost of chemical castration may vary and the price list indicates the procedure without taking into account the cost of Suprelorin.

Chemical sterilization is easier and more convenient to carry out at home: there is no need to take your pet to the hospital, expose it to the stress of travel and the unfamiliar environment of the clinic.

Sterilizing a dog at home

As mentioned above, the sterilization procedure is carried out by an experienced surgeon in a clinic or at home.
Sterilization of dogs at home is popular due to the fact that the animal is always in familiar conditions, which eliminates the occurrence of a stressful condition. Often dogs, when in an unfamiliar place, even with good care and friendly attitude of the staff, can refuse food and water and show aggression, which does not contribute to a speedy recovery. When performing this operation at home, the dog does not need to be transported, which also protects from unnecessary stress, which is especially convenient if the dog has not been transported before, was transported very rarely, or it reacts negatively to transportation.

Sterilization of dogs is carried out in all branches: on Borovskoe highway, building 20, on the street. Aircraft designer Petlyakov building 5 and st. Sculptor Mukhina, 13, as well as a call service at home.

For your convenience, the clinic operates a pre-registration system by telephone. To find out more about sterilization of dogs, schedule a visit or call a veterinarian at home, and also clarify the cost of the clinic’s services, you can call the general telephone number of the Vasilek clinic network +7 (499) 110-01-05

How is castration of cats and dogs carried out?

There are 2 options for the operation: 1. Laparoscopically - i.e. through 2 small incisions in the abdominal cavity, but in this case only the ovaries are removed. This procedure requires special equipment - an endoscope. 2. Laparotomy - through a standard approach, a small incision of about 3-4 cm along the white midline of the abdomen, and this is an abdominal operation. It takes about 30 minutes in duration.

Both options are available in our clinic.

laparoscopic

If this is castration of a male or female cat (not cryptorchid, i.e. the testes are localized in the scrotum), a non-abdominal operation should be performed. A small incision is made in the skin of the scrotum, the vessel and spermatic cord are ligated, and the testes are removed. This procedure takes about 10 minutes.

In cats, in most cases, the skin of the scrotum is not removed after castration. In large breeds of dogs, the skin of the scrotum is collected in several folds, resembling small bags in appearance. From an aesthetic point of view, this bothers some owners. Therefore, owners need to notify the surgeon in advance about plastic surgery of the scrotal skin (removal of part of it). Surgeons at our clinic can perform this type of plastic surgery.

castration

If your pet is a cryptorchid, then, depending on the location of the testis, this can be either a non-cavitary operation (if the testis is located in the inguinal canal) or a cavitary operation (through an incision in the abdominal cavity along the midline). And the duration of such an operation is a little longer - about 30 minutes. Before surgery, it is advisable to undergo an ultrasound examination to determine the approximate location of the testis.

There is also one important point: sometimes owners think that they have a cat, but during a preoperative examination by a veterinarian it turns out that it is a cat. In this case, another operation will be performed - abdominal ovariohysterectomy of the cat. What is this? This is the removal of the ovaries and uterus. This operation is performed on both cats and dogs. The size of the incision in neutered females depends on the size of the animal. In a dog it can be more than 5 cm.
