This large group of dogs mainly includes Western pointy-eared shepherds, which have a different origin than the Asian (southern) ones and appeared later. The name of the breeds of these shepherd dogs, as a rule, contains the name of the country or locality where these breeds were bred and where they originated from, for example, German, Belgian, English, South Russian and others. This group of dogs has an innate herding instinct that is inherited. They are able not only to guard and protect the herd, but also to graze it, that is, they have the ability to combine a shepherd and a watchman, and powerful, strong, efficient cattle dogs helped livestock traders drive cattle, sheep and pigs over long distances from the producer to market. The dog collected animals in dense herds, drove them and protected them from thieves.

In Ukraine, herding dogs were prepared in state breeding nurseries in the cities of Nikolaev and Crimea (Dzhankoy). The Crimean kennel played an important role in the restoration and spread of the South Russian Shepherd breeds. Possessing excellent instincts, innate distrust of strangers, the ability to always be on the alert, show malice towards strangers, excellent learning abilities, the breeds of these dogs can be used for other purposes. They are very suitable for performing official, sports, military and other duties.

According to the classification of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the first group of dogs is divided into two sections:

  1. herding dogs (shepherd dogs);
  2. cattle dogs, except Swiss dogs.

BASSET HOUND

The history of the basset hound began in France, where all low-set and small breeds were called "basset" regardless of whether they were hounds or terriers. “Bass set” literally means “low-set.”

The exact history of the development of this breed is not precisely known; however, there is evidence that English breeders crossed French Basset Hounds (Ardennes, Artesian-Norman and Artesian) and at the same time added the blood of another breed - the Bloodhound. The dog of this breed was originally considered a hound dog and its breeding dates back to the 13th century.

In 1863, the Basset Hound breed was first shown in France, in Paris. In 1875 - in Great Britain. A club for fans of this breed was created in 1883 in Great Britain.

Before choosing a dog of this particular breed, you should take into account that the Basset Hound dog breed, firstly, is a very mobile and active breed that needs regular and sufficient physical activity.

Secondly, Bassets need constant company and will feel lonely if left alone for a long time. And as a result, the dog may develop bad habits, for example, excessive barking, howling, and out of boredom, it may begin to chew and spoil things.

Thirdly, basset hounds have a surprisingly tenacious memory. Having once asked your permission to climb onto your sofa with her infinitely sad look, she, having matured, will make the sofa her personal residence. Therefore, in raising a basset you will need consistency, patience and a supply of free time.
