Character of the shorthaired pointer breed

Shorthaired pointers are, first of all, unique hunters endowed with excellent sense of smell. But they may well be devoted friends, enjoying the love of all family members. Representatives of the shorthaired pointer breed are unusually noisy and active, they always care about everything, they like to be direct participants in the thick of things. By directing this energy in the right direction, you can raise the smartest dog who enjoys the learning process.

However, shorthaired pointers have one feature that should be taken into account when deciding whether to own this breed or not. However, this tendency is inherent in most hunting dogs - a tendency towards dominance.

Only a person with a strong, strong-willed character will be able to subjugate a stubborn person and maintain leadership. If you do not pay due attention to this point in upbringing, the shorthaired pointer will grow up willful and disobedient. Punishments and physical influence are unacceptable!

Provided proper training started at an early age, a shorthaired pointer puppy will turn out to be a charming dog, kind, loyal and reliable, striving to please its owner in everything.

Shorthaired Pointer dogs do not tolerate separation from their owner well and miss him. They require communication and attention to their person. Dog handlers do not advise leaving a pet for a long time, otherwise it may develop cowardice and aggression.

How to choose a shorthaired pointer puppy

Shorthaired Pointers are not very common in Russia, hence the high cost of puppies. The price depends on the class. So, a pet-class baby (without hereditary diseases, with documents) will cost 15-20 thousand rubles. Representatives of the breed class are more expensive - 30-40 thousand. They have some deviations from the standard that do not allow them to take part in exhibitions.

They can participate in breeding work. Finally, show-class shorthaired pointers are exhibitors and excellent producers, their parents are titled champions, so the cost will be even higher. The price for such babies starts from 65 thousand.

When choosing a shorthaired pointer puppy, you should be guided by general criteria - healthy appearance, curiosity, lack of aggression. However, this is, first of all, a hunting dog, so they pay attention to other nuances. If a dog is needed as a worker, then its mom and dad should be excellent hunters.

Keep in mind that bitches are easier to train, they are affectionate and loyal, but during the period of heat you can forget about hunting. Male Shorthaired Pointers are no worse trained, but they are too independent, and also have a tendency to run away in search of love affairs.

You can pick up a puppy from the kennel at the age of two months, but no later than six months - it is more difficult for older shorthaired pointers to adapt to a new home.

Character and habits

The character of the shorthaired pointer was determined by many years of selection of this breed as a hunting dog.

German Pointers are very active and agile and although they are generally quite friendly in nature, they require a lot of exercise and activity. Kurzhaar is an excellent athlete. These dogs gladly take part in a variety of active games, especially those related to copying “hunts,” for example, the well-known “fetch” command.

Shorthaired Pointers are very attached to the owner and his family; they are moderately aggressive towards strangers, although here everything depends more on the upbringing of a particular dog. They react calmly to children. They will get along well with cats if they are raised together and given appropriate training. Almost any bird and small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) can easily be perceived as game with all the ensuing consequences, so it is better not to leave these animals alone with German cops.

How to care for a shorthaired pointer dog

The Shorthaired Pointer will fit perfectly into apartment living conditions, but he will also be comfortable in the fresh air, of course, if there is an enclosure and a warm booth.

If the shorthaired pointer puppy will live indoors, then it is necessary to allocate a separate place with bedding.

You should take walks with your shorthaired pointer in the morning and evening for at least 45 minutes. The ideal place is a field, lawn, park, where the dog can run and frolic for his own pleasure. Walks must be combined with exercise so that your four-legged pet does not lose shape.

The Shorthaired Pointer's short coat needs to be combed to remove dead hairs. This procedure is necessary to maintain the exterior and stimulate coat renewal.

During the molting period (three times a year), you need to comb your four-legged pet every day; at other times, once a week will be enough. But frequent bathing is contraindicated for shorthaired pointers. It is advisable to simply wipe the hard wool with a damp cloth.

A complete, balanced diet is of great importance for the proper physical development of the shorthaired pointer. It is advisable to use premium and super premium class feeds, in which vitamins and microelements are in optimal proportions.

If preference is given to “natural” food, then the main product in the diet should be lean meat mixed with cereals.

Other necessary hygienic procedures that the shorthaired pointer should be subjected to include wiping the eyes, cleaning the teeth and ears from wax and dirt.
