Affenpinscher
The name of the breed is literally translated from German as “pinscher monkey”. This miniature pinscher has a muzzle that resembles primates, which is why it received its nickname.
The Affenpinscher is a very old breed; back in the 16th century, these dogs were depicted in the engravings of one of the greatest German artists, Albrecht Durer. This breed acquired its modern appearance in the 17th century, when larger individuals were replaced by compact “monkeys” that coped well with rodents in the kitchens of German housewives.
Despite the fact that the Affenpinscher looks like a cross between a monkey and an Ewok, in 2013 a representative of this breed named Banana Joe took home the gold medal at a prestigious London exhibition.
Dog breeds that few people have heard of

New Guinea singing dog
This is a forgotten dog species native to tropical New Guinea. Known for 6000 years. Experts suggest that people initially tried to tame them in the Stone Age in order to use dogs in hunting. However, man has never been able to establish a connection with animals. At the moment, the breed is recognized as a unique subspecies of wolf. You can meet representatives in zoos. The dogs received their unusual name due to their characteristic howl, which is reminiscent of birdsong and the sounds of whales.
French Shepherd Beauceron

American Mastiff
The American Mastiff is a breed that appeared in the world relatively recently. At the moment, specialists are actively engaged in improving dogs and breeding them. Despite its development, the breed is not recognized in the canine community. Mastiffs are of impressive size, so they are often used to guard objects or protect people. However, such dogs are also found as companions.
Animals with a calm and calm character are quite affectionate and kind to their family. In case of danger, they will protect their family to the last.
Barbet or French water dog
The breed was developed in 1920 in Europe. Often used to help on farms. Due to their good swimming abilities, the pets were sent to hunt for birds. Translated from French, barbet means “beard.” This name corresponds to the external features of the dog, since there is a pronounced beard made of wool on its muzzle. Nature has rewarded these dogs with good character, obedience, intelligence and activity.
Thai Ridgeback
This is one of the most ancient and rare breeds. He has an independent and stubborn character. For this reason, it is necessary to have such dogs for strong-willed people who can properly raise their pet. The Ridgeback cannot stand loneliness and prefers to constantly be near a person. In relation to other animals, dogs are loyal to everyone except rodents and birds. These representatives treat children well and do not show aggression towards them.

Every year, no more than 100 Dandie Dinmonts are bred worldwide.

Lion dog Bichon Lyon or Levchen

At first, these dogs were popular among rich people in France and Germany. Therefore, the image of levchen is often found in old paintings and tapestries. By nature, pets are affectionate, sociable and cheerful. Despite its miniature size, the lion dog will always protect its owner.
Kennel can charge up to $8,000 for a Lewchen puppy
Russian toy terrier

It is a mistake to believe that toy terriers have an aggressive character. In fact, they are well-mannered and friendly. They show their anger only in appropriate situations.

Look at this hot Italian! Initially, this breed was a herding breed, and its wool was such that it did not stand out too much from the crowd of sheep.
In fact, the Bergamasco is an ancient breed, about two thousand years old. These dogs are distinguished by their good nature and unpretentiousness, which, again, is easy to notice by their coat. Another important character trait of the Bergamasco Shepherd is stubbornness. It manifests itself from the first days, and it is difficult to fight it.
The coat of this dog breed is so thick that it dries completely within two days. It's no surprise that Bergamascos aren't big fans of swimming.
Leonberger
Leonberger
"Leonberger" means "mountain lion" in German. There are two versions of the origin of these dogs.
According to the first, this dog breed was bred in the city of the same name, Leonberg. The fact is that the coat of arms of this city depicts a lion, so one dog breeder (Mr. Essig) came up with the idea of bringing a breed of dog that looks like a lion. He crossed different breeds and eventually got what he wanted. This happened in 1848.
According to the second version, the Leonberger was known much earlier, although it had a different name. Allegedly, in the Middle Ages, these dogs served as livestock guards for farmers, where they were noticed by wealthy Europeans. As a result, the dogs were brought to many palaces in Europe, for example, the wife of the King of France, Marie Antoinette, bought herself a huge Leonberger.
But in the 19th century, this breed of dogs was struck by a disease - distemper - and they all died. After this, the aforementioned Mr. Essig, having difficulty finding surviving dogs, was able to recreate this breed. According to experts, he deliberately invented a story about an allegedly newly created breed of dogs in order to raise their price. And, I must say, he succeeded.
In the first half of the 20th century, Leonbergers practically disappeared from the face of the earth - only three dogs remained. But, fortunately, this breed was again able to be “resurrected”, although in Russia it is still the rarest breed of dog.
Other names for this adorable dog are “Bichon Lion” and “Lion Dog”. Levchen is a relative of the lapdog, which also has very thick and beautiful fur, which is usually cut, leaving, like a lion, a “broom” at the tip of the tail and a “mane” on the neck and head, in order to correspond to the name.
Leonbergers have always been excellent guard dogs and affectionate pets. You heard right, these giants with the appearance of a lion have a magnificent calm character, they are very affectionate, sociable, attached to children and to their owner, and at the same time, if necessary, they will zealously protect those they consider their family. Leonbergers are easy to train and happily follow all the owner’s commands.
One purebred puppy of this breed costs at least 50 thousand rubles.
Bull Terrier
These egg-headed dogs were first bred in the mid-19th century to incorporate the best features of their ancestors: the English Bulldog, White English Terrier and Dalmatian. The breeder managed to achieve his goal. The dog turned out to be smart, hardy, strong and active. In terms of appearance, however, we were not very lucky. The Bull Terrier looks like a mixture of a dog, a rat and an ostrich egg.
For their “soldier” qualities, bull terriers gained fame as excellent fighting dogs and often participated in bloody massacres, which today, fortunately, are prohibited and prosecuted by law. Fans of Jack London's novel "White Fang" probably remember the description of the bull terrier and his manners.

Komondor or Hungarian Shepherd
This is not a living doormat, this is a dog! The Hungarian version of the Bergamasco Shepherd is just asking for a reggae concert. Initially, the Komondor served as a sheep shepherd; Compared to him, a Bergamasco stands out in a flock of sheep like a hockey player on a football field.
This breed is at least a thousand years old; the Magyars used its representatives to protect houses and sheep even when they inhabited the Black Sea coast. The fur of these dogs grows throughout their lives, so washing them becomes more and more difficult over the years, since Komodoros do not like to have their hair cut.
History of the origin of the breed
Koori dogs were introduced to New Zealand in the 14th century. They were brought there by Maori settlers from Eastern Polynesia, who sailed there by canoe. There is no exact information about the popularity of kuri, but it is known that they were not very common. It is known that explorers who accompanied sailor James Cook on his voyages of 1770-1779 often saw these dogs in different parts of New Zealand.
Kuris were not gentle, friendly, sociable or cute dogs, but Maori women liked them and kept them as pets. But not everyone revered these pets, since they were very aggressive, evil, cunning and often bit people.
A few years later, European settlers brought dogs with them to New Zealand. After crossing the Kuri with European dog breeds, purebred individuals of the breed became less and less, and then they completely disappeared. According to some sources, there were wild (feral) Kuri dogs that lived in caves and were hunted. Wild individuals were completely destroyed by European settlers. Stuffed animals of two individuals of this breed are kept in the collection of the Te Papa Tongarewa National Museum, located in New Zealand.
Russian greyhound
The heir to the Circassian hunting dogs, the Russian greyhound looks majestic and graceful, but still a little ridiculous, not to mention the fact that the poor thing just wants to be fed.
At their core, they are ordinary long-haired hunting dogs, but the one who saw this miracle of nature would not dare to call them ordinary. This breed is used for baiting - hunting without guns or other firearms. Russian greyhounds are very intelligent, calm and active. They hardly bark and do not tolerate useless activities. If you are planning to teach your greyhound to sing or dance, don't even think about it, this is not for him.

At the origin of this breed, about 200 years ago, hunters called Bedlingtons sheep with a lion's heart. In fact, this terrier is so similar to a small lamb that it is difficult to believe that these dogs were once one of the most fierce hunters. In their weight category, these ferocious animals (yes, just imagine, ferocious!) had no equal either among dogs or among other animals.
About 150 years ago, when dog shows gained popularity, Bedlingtons attracted the attention of not only hunters, but also other lovers of man's four-legged friends, for whom it was not ferocity that was important, but friendliness.
Since then, the character of some Bedlingtons has changed significantly, and now they are famous not only for their ability to tear their prey to shreds, but also for being excellent nannies for babies. The Irony of Fate!
TOP 10 most amazing and unusual dogs
So, we present the golden ten dogs that will not leave anyone indifferent, each is unique in its own right. And they are like that in everything - appearance, character, price.
Pharaoh Hound
The oldest existing breed. Its appearance has miraculously survived to this day and has undergone almost no changes. She is the living embodiment of the ancient Egyptian image of the god Anubis. This breed is extremely rare - there are no more than 500 dogs of this breed in the world. Finland, Sweden and the USA are considered centers for breeding pharaoh dogs, and yet, in most countries there are no pharaohs at all. Having a pharaoh is prestigious, but buying one is very difficult. Many legends and amazing stories are associated with the name of the pharaoh's dog. In addition to their bright, unusual exterior, they have amazing features that are unusual for dogs. In a fit of joy, the pharaohs smile or wrinkle their nose funny. From embarrassment (pharaohs are very “conscientious” dogs) their ears, nose and eye rims turn red!
Amazing flexibility and grace cannot leave anyone indifferent. Pharaohs are perfect for keeping in an apartment; they are an excellent city dog. In the house they behave very calmly and reservedly. Pharaohs are sociable and sociable, although they are distrustful of strangers. Cowardice and nervousness are completely atypical for this breed. It should be noted that they are big eaters and are somewhat prone to being overweight, but it is not difficult to keep them in good athletic shape. Pharaohs get along well with dogs and other animals, rarely show aggression and, as a rule, do not claim leadership. Solving problems with teeth is not in their nature. Pharaohs treat children tenderly and patiently, and their natural delicacy and complete lack of aggression make them excellent companions for teenagers. However, it is necessary to remember that the Pharaoh Hound is physically very strong, so it is better not to trust them to children or elderly people. In our country, pharaoh dogs can be counted on one hand, but their popularity and interest in the breed is growing stronger every year. The average cost of a dog is from $3,500. Bedlington Terrier Is this a dog or a sheep? Bedlington Terriers are one of the strangest dog breeds. They have a pear-shaped head, fur like sheep's wool and triangular ears. These dogs are truly different from other breeds! Although Bedlington looks as timid as a sheep, it is not so.
The character of this funny dog, outwardly so peaceful and good-natured, is very deceptive. The dog is distrustful and irritable. This is a real choleric person who does not like to give in to anyone.
In the process of working on the breed, some negative character traits of the Bedlington Terrier were smoothed out and now, in most cases, it is a loyal, balanced and very intelligent dog. Chinese Crested Dog The small Chinese Crested Dog has fur on its paws, tail and head. Their skin is soft and needs to be carefully cared for.

Like any herding dog, they are very unpretentious and eat very little, a little more than 1 kg of food per day.
Peruvian Inca Orchid In Spanish, the breed's name means "hairless dog from Peru." These small dogs have even less hair than the Chinese Crested! This ancient breed has been known since 750 AD.
In the past, their meat was used as a ritual dish; in addition, it was believed that they could save their owner from various ailments if they stayed near them during the night.
The conquest of Peru by the Spaniards almost led to the death of these unique dogs. Although these dogs sometimes have some hair on their legs, tail and head, breeders strive to remove them. It is necessary to moisturize the skin with lotion to prevent drying.
Shar Pei Shar Pei means sandy skin in Chinese. No one can confuse the Shar Pei with another breed. This wrinkled dog has an unusual face similar to a hippopotamus. The Shar Pei has a hard blue tongue. Puppies have wrinkles everywhere!
As the dog grows up, the wrinkles become less obvious and remain on the head and back. During the Cultural Revolution, the breed was almost completely destroyed by the communists; a small number survived in Taiwan and Macau.
Mexican Hairless Dog (Xoloitzcuintle - Xolo) The breed is considered the earthly representative of the god Xolotl, from whom its name comes. Xolotl is the Aztec sun god, the lord of duality (life and death), and “Itzcuintli” can be translated in different ways: firstly, it is a dog, and secondly, it is a slave or servant.
Thus, the Xoloitzcuintle is a dog or servant of the god Xolotl. These small dogs look almost identical to the Peruvian Inca Orchid, but they have a different origin.
Xolos were considered sacred by the Aztecs; they were guides to the underworld after the dead. Therefore, many were buried with the Xolo, who were sacrificed on this occasion.
Bergamasco Sheepdog (Bergamasco, Cane de pastore bergamasco) The Bergamasco's coat is very unusual and resembles scales. It looks like long twisted cords and serves as excellent protection both from bad weather and from the teeth of wolves. When attacking a herd, the grays meet resistance in the form of a brave bergamasco, and, trying to use their teeth, they cannot bite through this felt shell.

Bouvier des Flanders
The name of the breed is translated from French as “Flanders cow herder.” And in fact, the dog looks like you shouldn’t be afraid to entrust this giant with a herd of cattle. Other names and nicknames for this breed are “dirty beard” and “Flanders cow”. Need I say anything more about the appearance of these dogs?

Bouvier is famous for his fearlessness, calm character, strength and talent as a tracker. That is why, when herds of sheep and cows are not as common in the world as criminals, the Bouvier des Flanders is in the service of the police.
Bouviers evolved from herding dogs to working dogs during the First World War. The terrible events of that time brought the breed to the verge of complete extinction. Fortunately, nature did its best, and the fluffies were saved.
Kuri (dog)
History Kuri are descended from Polynesian poi dogs that came to New Zealand by canoe with Maori settlers who arrived from Eastern Polynesia in the 13th century. There is no reliable data on the prevalence of kuri, but it is unlikely that they were very numerous. It is known that the explorers who accompanied James Cook on his voyages of 1770-1779 repeatedly saw these dogs in different places in New Zealand. European settlers brought dogs with them. Due to crossbreeding with European breeds, purebred chickens became increasingly rare and gradually disappeared. Some sources also mention wild (feral) Kuri, who lived in caves and were the subject of hunting. Wild chickens were completely exterminated by European settlers. The remains of the last known domestic kuri, a female and her puppy, are held in the Te Papa Tongarewa collection of the National Museum of New Zealand.
Appearance Kuri were rather small, no larger than a border collie, squat dogs that looked like foxes. They weighed 13-15 kg, had an elongated body, short legs, and a thick fluffy tail. The coat is long, solid black, red or white; spotted specimens were also found. Pointed erect ears, elongated muzzle, powerful jaws with very sharp teeth. The sounds that the kuri made were more similar to the prolonged howl of a fox than to the barking of a dog. The Maoris rendered the sounds of kuri as the onomatopoeia auau, while the barking of European dogs was called pahupahu.
The use of Kuri played a large role in the traditions and life of the Maori. The dog sometimes replaced a human sacrifice in a religious rite in honor of the god of war, Tu: the dog's heart was roasted on a spit, the god enjoyed the aroma, and the meat was eaten by the priests. The less bloodthirsty god Maru did not require human sacrifices and made do with a dog. There are many legends and tales about kuri in Maori mythology and folklore.
Kuri dogs were eaten, and Kuri meat was considered a delicacy. Clothes were made from the skins, and weapons, belts, and poi balls were decorated with wool from kuri tails. Teeth and bones were used to make earrings and necklaces, as well as fishing gear.
Despite their not very good sense of smell, kuri were used in hunting flightless birds - kiwi and ducks during the molting season. The hunter in ambush lured the birds with a decoy, and when the game came close enough, he released the dog. A rather exotic method of catching poorly flying wading birds in windy weather is also described: frightened by hunters, they could not fly against the wind and became prey for dogs. Koori were not affectionate or sociable, but Maori women loved them and kept them as pets.

Cirneco del Etna
Also called the Sicilian Greyhound, this breed traces its roots back to ancient Egypt and the dogs of the pharaohs. And indeed, all that is missing is pschent (the crown of the pharaohs) - and simply Nefertiti in the flesh! In fact, just as the Affenpinscher resembles a monkey, the Sicilian Greyhound resembles Egyptian frescoes in its appearance.
Despite the aristocratic origin and appearance, the main feature of Cirneco del Etna is endurance. They can run off-road without food or water all day. You can't tell by looking!
Chinese Crested Dog
If this list had the first place, this creation of nature would take it with such a margin that another 11 breeds could fit into it. Corydalis has two types: naked and puffed. Hairless individuals appeared, oddly enough, in Africa, and of the entire body of these dogs, only the ears, paws and tail are covered with hair. It's a strange sight, especially when a Chinese Crested dog tries to get out of its owner's purse in a cafe or store.

Compact, small dogs do not exceed 32 cm in height. Since the beginning of the 20th century, griffons have been divided into two weight categories:
- Up to 3 kg;
- 3.5 – 6 kg.
The griffon is shaped like a square. A characteristic feature of the breed is a large head relative to the size of the body and an expressive muzzle. In a “flat-faced” dog, the nostrils are almost at eye level. Widely spaced round eyes are dark in color. The ears are small, cropped and undocked ears are allowed. The tail is usually docked, with the undocked tail carried upward.

The elegant Belgian Griffon is a black dog (photo). Color with tan marks is allowed. Griffon dogs' fur is hard, slightly wavy, and tousled; there is undercoat. The hair above the eyes and on the cheekbones is longer and forms the eyebrows, mustache and beard.
