Advocate - Advocate Drops on the withers for dogs from 25kg to 40kg

Advocate® drops on the withers against scabies mites, fleas and helminths

general information

Advocate® is a combined antiparasitic drug. 1 ml of the drug contains imidacloprid - 100 mg and moxidectin - 25 mg. Advocate® is available in the form of drops on the withers in four dosages - for puppies and dogs up to 4 kg, for dogs 4-10 kg, for dogs 10-25 kg and for dogs over 25 kg. Manufacturer: Bayer (Germany).

Indications

Advocate® is prescribed to dogs for the treatment and prevention of demodicosis (Demodex canis), otodectosis (Otodectes cynotis), sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis), entomoses (Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalide canis, Linognathus setosus, Trichodectes canis), nematodes (Toxosara canis, Toxascaris leonine, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Trichuris vulpis, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis), prevention of dirofilariasis (larvae L3 and L4 (microfilaria) of Dirofilaria immitis), as well as in the complex therapy of flea allergic dermatitis.

Application

Advocate® can be used on puppies over 7 weeks of age. Treatment of dogs weighing less than 1 kg, pregnant and lactating bitches should be carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian. Advocate® is applied to dry, intact skin in areas inaccessible to licking, directly to the skin between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. When treating large animals, the contents of the pipettes are applied to the skin in 3-4 places.

To destroy fleas, lice and lice, animals are treated once, to prevent re-infestation - once every four weeks throughout the season when insects are most active. For the treatment of otodectosis (ear scabies), the drug is used once. If necessary, the course of treatment is repeated after 1 month. To treat sarcoptic mange, the drug is used once a month for two months, for demodicosis - once a month for 2-4 months, in order to prevent possible invasion, treatments are carried out once a month. When treating complicated demodicosis, the frequency of use of Advocate® is increased to 1 time per week. To deworm animals with nematodes, the drug is used once. In order to prevent dirofilariasis, the drug is used once before the start of the summer of mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. Immitis), then once a month and the last time in the season 1 month after the end of the summer of insects. Advocate® does not destroy mature dirofilariae, but reduces the number of microfilariae circulating in the blood, and can also be used in infested animals.

Mechanism of action

Imidacloprid interacts with acetylcholine receptors of arthropods and disrupts the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to the death of insects. Moxidectin binds to postsynaptic receptors, causing disruption of muscle innervation, paralysis and death of ectoparasites and nematodes.

Efficiency

After applying the drug to the skin, imidacloprid is quickly distributed over the surface of the body and, remaining on the epidermis and fur, has a long-term (up to 4 weeks) insectoacaricidal effect. Moxidectin is well absorbed, enters the systemic bloodstream, organs and tissues, reaching its maximum concentration in the blood plasma on days 4-9, and is excreted from the body within 30 days. The drug remains effective even if the animal’s fur gets wet; however, after treatment, you should not frequently wash the animal with shampoo and/or bathe it in water immediately after applying the drug, as this may reduce its effectiveness.

Safety

As a rule, there are no side effects or complications when using the drug Advocate® in accordance with these instructions. The shelf life of the drug, subject to storage conditions, is 3 years from the date of production.

Advocate drops for cats have a wide range of antiparasitic effects; the drug is active against sarcoptoid mites that parasitize cats, including otodectosis, fleas, nematodes of any developmental phases and larval forms of heartworms. Advocate can be used in complex therapy of allergic dermatitis caused by fleas.

Imidacloprid, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of chloronicotinyl insecticides, the mechanism of action of which is based on interaction with acetylcholine receptors of arthropods and disruption of the transmission of nerve impulses, causing the death of insects.

Moxidectin is a semisynthetic compound from the milbemycin group. Having a stimulating effect on the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid and binding to postsynaptic receptors, it causes disruption of muscle innervation, paralysis and death of ectoparasites and nematodes.

In terms of the degree of impact on the body, Advocate belongs to moderately dangerous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76): LD50 when administered orally to white mice is more than 1000 mg/kg, when applied cutaneously - more than 4000 mg/kg of animal weight; has weakly expressed cumulative properties.

Advocate is prescribed to cats for the treatment and prevention of otodectosis, entomosis, intestinal nematodes (toxocariasis, hookworm), as well as for the prevention of dirofilariasis.

The drug is used by animals by drip (spot-on) application to dry, intact skin.

Before use, remove the protective cap from the pipette and, positioning it vertically, pierce the protective membrane of the pipette nose (putting the cap on the back side), then remove it again. The drug, by spreading the fur, is applied to the animal in places inaccessible for licking, directly between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck.

The minimum therapeutic dose of Advocate for cats is 0.1 ml/kg of animal weight (10 mg/kg imidacloprid and 1.0 mg/kg moxidectin).

Depending on the weight of the cat, Advocate drops of different packaging are used in the doses indicated in the table:

Animal weight, kg Pipette markings Drug dose (nominal pipette volume), ml Dose of active substance, mg/kg
imidacloprid moxidectin
Up to 4 For small cats 0,4 Minimum 10.0 Minimum 1.0
4-8 For large cats 0,8 10,0-20,0 1,0-2,0
Over 8 Use the appropriate combination of pipettes

When treating cats weighing more than 8 kg, the drug is used in a dose of 0.1 ml per kg of animal weight, using a combination of pipettes of various packaging.

To kill fleas, cats are treated once. In a comprehensive program for the prevention and treatment of allergic dermatitis caused by fleas, Advocate drops are used once a month.

To treat otodectosis (ear scabies), the drug is applied to the skin once. During the treatment process, it is recommended to clean the ear canal of exudate and scabs, and in case of complications with otitis media, prescribe antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory drugs. Do not inject directly into the ear canal. If necessary, the course of treatment is repeated after 1 month.

For deworming of cats with nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract, the drug is used for therapeutic purposes once, for prophylactic purposes - once a month.

In order to prevent dirofilariasis in regions unfavorable for the disease, the drug is used in the spring-summer-autumn period: before the start of the flight of mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. immitis) once, then once a month and the last time in the season no earlier than 1 month after completion of insect flight. Advocate does not destroy sexually mature heartworms, but reduces the number of microfilariae circulating in the blood. If the animal lives or has a short stay in regions unfavorable for the disease, before prescribing the drug for the purpose of dirofilariasis prevention, it is recommended to diagnose the animal for the presence of the disease.

Advocate is prohibited from use on kittens under 9 weeks of age, patients with infectious diseases and convalescent animals.

Treatment of cats weighing less than 1 kg, pregnant and lactating cats should be carried out with caution under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Advocate drops should not be applied to wet or damaged skin, bathe the animal in open water for 4 days after treatment with the drug, and also use the drug simultaneously with medications containing macrocyclic lactones.

As a rule, there are no side effects when using Advocate drops in accordance with these instructions. In rare cases, the animal may experience individual reactions (redness of the skin, itching, oily fur, erythema, vomiting), which resolve spontaneously and do not require the use of medications. In case of accidental licking, in rare cases, short-term neurological signs and increased salivation may appear.
